Weaving Water Workshop: landscape of creativity

  • Downtown Bemidji Bemidji, MN (map)

Minneapolis-based artist and botanist Sarah Nassif is collaborating with Watermark Art Center to bring an indigo dye and fiber community art project entitled "Weaving Water Workshop: landscape of creativity" to the 56th Annual Watermark Art Festival's Family Art Activity Area. Nassif will guide festival-goers as they try their hand at spinning, folding, binding, and dyeing to create unique patterns in cloth and fiber. The many fragments produced during the festival will be woven into a new textile artwork piece to be displayed at the Watermark Art Center after the festival.

What is the meaning of "Weaving Water" and how do landscapes and watersheds inspire creativity? The project explores the intersections of water, weaving and the shared experience of participating in public workshops. Similar to a watershed that encompasses all the streams and rivers that run into a common body of water, Nassif explains, "each of us channels the creativity of our ancestors, life experiences and cultural traditions." The intention of this interactive project is to deepen humanity's connection to the land, water, and one another.

There is no registration or fee required to participate in this drop-in project or attend the festival. Learn more about this workshop, the festival, and the many activities offered throughout the weekend at Watermarkartcenter.org. The festival grounds include Library Park and the outdoor spaces of Watermark Art Center. The center's galleries and gift shop will be open during the festival as well.
