Smart Wars- Gaa-miinigoowiziyang “What we were given.”
Reception will be held on October 4th, 5pm-7pm.
Divest or Die: “Smart Wars” Artists Depict Battle to Protect Earth
Written by Andrew Neef & Rachel Weiland for Unicorn Riot June 22nd, 2018 (Submitted by the Artist, Rory Wakemup)
Minneapolis, MN- Every summer in the Twin Cities, artists bring to life the NOrthern Spark art festival, which is free to the public and lasts throughout the night in downtown Minneapolis. One of the opening events at this years festival, called “Smart Wars: Divest or Die”, brought together indigenous youth and artists in a “bedazzling” performance of “funkavism” (fun activism.)
Through performance art, Smart Wars displays a story of a shared indigenous reality where the human family joins forces to protect the water against destructive corporate greed. The performance begins with two sides facing one another in a battle among blue streaming banners which represent the water. After an extensive display of light-saber warfare to the beat of indigenous drumming, the two sides realize their common enemy is the tyrannical corporations, which is represented by a black “oil snake.” The two sides then band together and cut the head off the black snake and begin a round dance together, with the crowd joining in. Throughout the performance, the artists illustrate the immediate need to protect and share the Earth with all species, and what the artists believe is the path forward toward a harmonious co-existence. iPhone Artistry
Watermark Art Center will hold an open house for photographer, William Petersen on October 4 from 5 to 7pm. His digital photography exhibit "iPhone Artistry" will be on display from October 4 through December 28, 2024. On October 24 (times to be determined), he will give a talk on his methods of working with phone cameras.
Petersen's first camera was a Kodak Duaflex box camera given to him by his parents when he was eleven. The film was 620 roll film in black-and-white only. From that very beginning, he knew the camera was able to capture more than “reality”, and it allowed him to share his "reality" of imagery.
After a few photography classes in college, his photography took a necessary back seat to his medical career until 1999 when he returned to his love affair with photography in a serious way. This period was also the advent of electronic cameras and digital "dark rooms". Initially he rejected much of that, but soon realized that the masters of black and white photography perfected their skills with decades of experimentation in a traditional darkroom. He soon decided to embrace photographic computer tools that he could learn in a fraction of the time necessary and still achieve amazing results.
He is grateful to have seen all the changes to photography methods that have occurred throughout his lifetime. Technology has allowed him to continue to share his view of "image reality" with others.
There is no charge to attend the open house. For more information regarding events, classes and exhibits visit watermarkartcenter.org or call 218-444-7570. Watermark galleries are accessible and open to the public Monday - Saturday from 10 to 5pm. Watermark is located at 505 Bemidji Avenue N. in Bemidji, Minnesota.

The goal of the annual Region 2 Arts Council AAI Fellowship Program is to assist the region’s most talented artists who are enrolled tribal members and descendants, in furthering and innovating their work by awarding substantial financial support to fund creative time and/or arts experiences that facilitate depth and advancement in their art form. Through such support, the R2AC aims to raise the profile of artistic work in the region and create a strong community of Anishinaabe Arts Initiative Fellows. Each fellow’s artwork will be featured on our website.
Typically one $5,000 award will be granted.
The funds can be used for, but not limited to:
Exploring new directions or continuing work in progress
Production costs, materials, or equipment
Marketing your work
Travel, research or study to further your art
Collaborative or community projects

Fun with Yupo Workshop
Class fee of $125, class is limited to 8. This workshop is for anyone interested in exploring the unique characteristics of YUPO. YUPO is a smooth inorganic (plastic) surface that accepts paint in a very different way than paper. Because the paint sits on the surface instead of being absorbed, it flows, mixes, and can give a very fluid abstract "liquid" lok to washes that can be very appealing (and frustrating if you are trying to "control" it.) The surface also allows colors to be more intense, giving a stained glass look that is amazing, and makes lifting easy, allowing a push-pull method of composition similar to working with opaque paints. This workshop is intended to give you a variety of ways to approach the unique characteristics of YUPO. We will take advantage of the abstract, flowing 'liquid' look of wet in wet application and experiment with stamping, texturing, lifting, and even texturing with foam rollers. We will talk about design and how to go from the crazy accidental abstraction of YUPI to finished work. We will also talk about 'taming' YUPO to do representational work, flattening washes, graded washes, etc. Come if you are a beginner and want to have fun playing with paint, or if you are an accomplished watercolorist who wants to explore a new surface, or anyone in between who wants to expand their horizons and try something new. I turn to YUPO when I want to "play" with watercolor and just have fun. The participant can expect to finish at least a couple completed or nearly completed paintings in the three days. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

There are also pieces needed for the grant application that you should gather before you apply, such as work samples (Work Sample Submission Policy), resume, and a list of all project costs.

IMPORTANT FOR ALL APPLICANTS: Project specific costs incurred and paid prior to a project’s Earliest Start Date will make a project ineligible for funding. Read about this and more:

Outcomes and Evaluation Methods
Because we ask you to engage community in this grant, we want you to set an outcome and a means to measure whether you successfully achieved that outcome. An outcome should describe a change in knowledge, skill, attitude, awareness, behavior, or condition in your target audience. Effective project outcomes are specific, measurable, and can be reasonably achieved by the proposed activity. It is important that you measure and document progress made in achieving the proposed outcome for the target audience. You may wish to consult Getting Started with Program Evaluation – a guide published by the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies for information on outcomes evaluation.

A Note on Grant Awards as Taxable Income
If awarded, you will be asked to fill out a W-9 tax form and the grant award will be considered extra income for you in that tax year. Because this is a grant for individuals, you cannot shift the tax burden to any limited liability companies/corporations you may own for your arts business, but you can use a fiscal sponsor. A fiscal sponsor is a nonprofit entity that lends you their nonprofit status and provides some financial oversight for funds received from a grant award. Often they charge a flat fee or request a percentage of granted funds for this service. If awarded, your grant award check would be made out to your fiscal sponsor, they would relay the funds to you in one large check or series of smaller payouts for your each of your expenses as you ask for/report them. The granted funds would be part of the fiscal sponsor’s tax reporting, removing the tax burden from you. You would want an agreement (sample fiscal sponsor agreement form) in place to set the responsibilities for each of you.

These grants help provide some measure of funding stability by offering operating support to arts organizations and arts affiliates so they can focus on increasing the quality and availability of the arts to their communities. Organizations qualify for funding amounts between $2,000 – $7,000 based on their averaged annual expenses from the past two years. This two-year grant open to any arts organization or arts affiliate. Arts groups formed for nonprofit purposes, with a fiscal sponsor, that plan to use this grant to apply for their own nonprofit status are also eligible.

Intro to Grants Writing: How to find and source grants
Region 2 Arts Council has been developing a free, monthly webinar for the public. We have noticed an increase of individuals not from our region visiting the office seeking grant assistance. Then we began thinking, what if we could offer a free online webinar for anyone to join, regardless of what region they are from? And thus started the development of Intro to Grants writing!
In these free online webinars, you can learn important information for you or your organization on how to find grant funding, how to write a grant application, and how to apply for grants. Speak first hand with Grants Manager, Holly Alcott. Individuals and organizations are all encouraged to register and participate in this free webinar, not just those residing in our five county region.
The first of these monthly webinars, How to find grants and apply, is being held on November 4th, 6pm-7pm. We look forward to seeing you there!

Project Unincorporated MN is a photo documentary focusing on 22 unincorporated towns in Northern MN. It also serves as tribute to the historical remnants of these towns and to the remarkable people who live in them. -Laura Grisamore

Mixed Media Portraits in Golden Open Acrylic and Prismacolor Pencil
This workshop is full but you may still be put on the waitlist! Go to bagleyarts.org and click under events. Class fee of: $100
Instructor Pamela Edevold will combine the techniques she taught in her Golden Open Acrylic and Prismacolor Premier workshops to create highly detailed portraits with lots of texture. Students who have not taken her previous classes are welcome and will learn the basics in the class as well as how the two mediums work together.
The class will work from an image supplied by the instructor, and students may also bring an 8x10 photo of their own to work from when finished with the class image (any type of portrait image is fine, including 3/4 poses or those where the eyes are not fully visible.) A supply list will be provided. Please bring your own lunch and beverages.
This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through grants from the Region 2 Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund.
