Gallery Exhibit | The Language of Fire: From Precision to Unpredictability
Tue, May 5, 202610:00 AM Fri, Jul 3, 20265:00 PM
The Language of Fire: From Precision to Unpredictability showcases the work of ceramic artist Robin Foster, a recognized artist whose practice explores the varied, material language of clay shaped through a spectrum of firing processes. Moving between carefully controlled kiln-fired works and pieces marked by the more unpredictable effects of pit firing and Raku, Foster reveals a rich constellation of surface, color, and texture—at times deliberate, at times yielded to chance. Often working with locally sourced clay drawn from northern Minnesota, his work remains quietly grounded in the landscape from which it emerges. Each piece holds a moment of transformation, where material, heat, and circumstance converge, inviting close looking and a sensory engagement with the balance between intention and outcome.

The Watermark Art Festival, formerly known as Art in the Park, is a vibrant and longstanding event that has been a summer highlight for Northern Minnesotan residents and tourists since 1967. This two-day festival, now in its 57th year, takes place on Saturday, July 19, and Sunday, July 20, 2025, in the heart of Downtown Bemidji.
The festival is a treasure trove for a diverse array of attendees, including families, art enthusiasts, music lovers, and foodies. It attracts thousands of visitors who come to immerse themselves in the rich cultural and artistic offerings. Families with children are particularly drawn to the Creative Zone, where art activities and demonstrations provide entertainment and educational opportunities. Music enthusiasts can enjoy the performances on two live music stages, featuring a variety of local and regional artists.
The event occurs on the third weekend of July, with the festival running from 10 AM to 5 PM on Saturday and from 10 AM to 4 PM on Sunday. This schedule allows ample time for attendees to explore the extensive range of activities and exhibits. There is no charge for entry and the consistent flow of live music, artist demonstrations, and interactive art activities ensures a dynamic atmosphere throughout the festival.
The Watermark Art Festival is held at the Watermark Art Center and the historic Library Park, located at 505 Bemidji Avenue N, Bemidji, MN 56601. This venue is easily accessible by car, with ample parking available nearby. For those traveling from further afield, Bemidji is served by the Bemidji Regional Airport, and major highways such as US-2 and US-71 provide convenient road access. The setting is particularly charming, with the festival area expanded to include both the Watermark Art Center grounds and the beautiful, tree-lined Library Park across the street.

The food court and covered picnic area provide a delightful space for attendees to enjoy local cuisine while taking a break from the art and music.
One of the standout features of the festival is the integration of the Watermark Art Center itself. The center’s galleries, including the retail gallery SHOP 505, are open to the public during the festival, offering a chance to view and purchase art from local and regional artists. The Creative Zone, with its free art activities and demonstrations, adds an interactive layer to the event, making it accessible and engaging for all ages.
The live music on two stages is another major draw, featuring local bands and musicians who bring a lively energy to the festival grounds. Avenue Q
Winner of the Tony “Triple Crown” for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book, Avenue Q is part flesh, part felt and packed with heart.
The laugh-out-loud musical tells the timeless story of a recent college grad named Princeton, who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q. He soon discovers that, although the residents seem nice, it’s clear that this is not your ordinary neighborhood. Together, Princeton and his new-found friends struggle to find jobs, dates and their ever-elusive purpose in life.
Filled with gut-busting humor and a delightfully catchy score, not to mention puppets, Avenue Q is a truly unique show that has quickly become a favorite for audiences everywhere. Although the show addresses humorous adult issues, it is similar to a beloved children’s show; a place where puppets are friends, Monsters are good, and life lessons are learned.

YOUTH Woodland Pottery Class – Gaawaabaabiganikaag
YOUTH Woodland Pottery Class – Gaawaabaabiganikaag
Come and learn about this ancient art form, create a pot and experience the firing process.
Woodland pottery is a utilitarian art form over 3000years old. Often, clay is harvested from veins visible near rivers and construction dig sites. Suitable clay deposits have a distinct color and feel. The clay matrix is processed by sifting out rocks and organic matter and is then treated much the same as other pottery clays.
This is a 4-day workshop. Attend all four days: June 15, 16, 17, 20: noon – 4 PM each day.

About the artists:
Mother and daughter duo, Janet Klarer and Eliza Klarer, create pottery by hand. They learned from Janet’s mother, Judy Toppings, an artist, teacher, and activist who worked alongside her cousin, Carrie Estey Ortiz, to revitalize the lost art form. Janet and Eliza serve the young arts nonprofit, Manoomin Arts Initiative, whose goal is to support emerging and working artists of their community.
This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota, through a grant from the Region 2 Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund.
