Before We Were Happy

Deadline: May 30th, 2026

Who?: New York Mills Regional Cultural Center

The New York Mills Regional Cultural Center is pleased to announce its 2026 Annual Adult Regional Show Theme: “Before We Were Happy.”

As has become tradition in recent years, the Annual Regional Adult Show’s theme is inspired by the corresponding year’s Great American Think-Off question, encouraging artists to explore big ideas through creative expression. A special reception honoring both participating regional artists and the Think-Off finalists will be held on Friday, June 12, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. This free community event is open to all and offers an opportunity to celebrate art, ideas, and conversation in a welcoming setting.

Call for Artists!

All regional artists aged 18 and up are invited to submit up to two pieces of art. All mediums 2D and 3D will be accepted.

  • Exhibit Dates: May 26 – July 4, 2026

  • Reception: Friday, June 12, 2026, from 6-8 PM

Keep reading below for relevant dates, fees, and details.

Exhibition Theme

Before We Were Happy explores a persistent American idea: that happiness once came more easily, before modern ambition, speed, and pursuit culture. This exhibition interrogates nostalgia as both comfort and myth, asking whether the past truly held greater happiness—or whether that belief obscures exclusion, inequality, and selective memory.

This exhibition is a visual response to the 2026 Great American Think-Off question:Has the pursuit of happiness made Americans unhappy?

Artists are invited to respond to the tension between nostalgia and myth, examining how ideas of happiness are constructed, remembered, inherited, or resisted.

Conceptual Framework: This exhibition seeks work engaging with one or more of the following perspectives:

Affirmative Approaches (Questioning the Past):

  • Sepia-toned irony and aestheticized memory

  • Idealized histories revealed as incomplete, exclusionary, or false

  • Happiness portrayed as a privilege granted to some and denied to others

  • Domestic, cultural, or national myths unraveled

Counterpoint Approaches (Challenging Nostalgia):

  • Exposing nostalgia as emotional refuge or denial

  • Progress shown as expanding access to happiness and self-determination

  • Joy emerging through struggle, resistance, or social change

  • Reimagining happiness as dynamic rather than lost

Key Question for Artists: Was happiness something we lost—or something we were never all allowed to have?

All visual art forms are encouraged, including painting, drawing, photography, fiber art, sculpture, and mixed media.

Queering Indigeneity

  • Google Calendar ICS

Beginning in 2023, the M has been in partnership with Penny Kagigebi (White Earth Ojibwe/direct descendant) to develop "Queering Indigeneity," a multi-year, multi-generational project focusing on 2-Spirit, Native queer, gender expansive vision in great diversity and celebration.

In seeking out and amplifying voices of Indigenous artists and culture bearers, the M, guided by Kagigebi, hopes to influence both the types of artists who are supported, seen, and centered at the museum, and to show both Indigenous and non-Indigenous visitors a more comprehensive, complicated, and true story of Minnesotan art and artists.

"Queering Indigeneity" will open at the M in the Nancy and John Lindahl Gallery on September 18th, 2025 featuring 16 native artists from the Upper Midwest: Sharon Day, Ryan Young, Delia Touché, Awanigiizhik Bruce, Niibawi Ajijaak, Awanaabe Syverson, Zoe Allen, Naawakamigookwe Lera Hephner, Noah Polk, Madeline Treuer, Chewie Mason, Asin-Gwiiwizens, Sav Jonsa, Giiwedin, Nick Metcalf, and Penny Kagigebi.

Connecting Threads
– Bemidji Area Weavers Guild

EXHIBIT February 6 – April 25, 2026
RECEPTION  Friday, February 6, 5 to 7pm

WORKSHOP March 10 – 12, 2026: Revelations in Rep Weave Workshop With Master Weaver and Teacher, Kelly Marshall

COMMUNITY LECTURE at Watermark on Monday, March 9 from 4 to 5:30pm, doors open at 3pm. Q&A with Master Weaver and Teacher, Kelly Marshall. The presentation is a broad-spectrum lecture on design and specific rep weave (Swedish Ripsmatta) technique. It is free and open to the public, but space is limited.

Over time, weaving has transformed from being a basic necessity—essential for warmth and protection—into an expressive art form and a powerful means of building community. The art form serves a dual purpose: while it preserves heritage and traditions, it also encourages innovation by adapting new techniques and ideas. This dynamic process connects generations, allowing individuals to share skills and stories that span time.

When an artist is also a weaver, their deep understanding of fibers, textures, colors, and practical uses creates a unique interaction within their work. This combination of knowledge and skill results in fabrics that embody both function and artistic expression, offering a distinct perspective that cannot be found elsewhere.

When weaving, finding a rhythm with the shuttle, beater, and treadles creates a meditative pause. Time slows, the small and big worries of the day fall away, and we are no longer separate, focused on our own perceptions, but part of a greater whole. Although we are working, we are also at rest.

The Bemidji Area Weavers Guild (BAWG) was started by weavers eager to share their enthusiasm and expertise in fiber arts. By coming together and practicing as a group, BAWG has created a sense of belonging, developed members’ skills, and united a weaving community in Northern Minnesota. Events like workshops, social gatherings, and exhibitions provide opportunities for BAWG members to exchange ideas, learn from each other, and build stronger social connections, all while enriching the region’s cultural scene.

Biida’adoo – Walking Her PathCindy Hamilton

Biida’adoo – Walking Her Path
Cindy Hamilton

EXHIBIT: March 13 – May 15, 2026
RECEPTION: Saturday, March 28 from 2 – 4pm

Artist Statement

Every stitch, every bead, and every brushstroke tells the story of a profound journey of ancestral discovery turned into creative exploration and expression for Ojibwe artist Cindy Hamilton.

Known as “The Moccasin Lady,” Hamilton is recognized for her beautiful craftsmanship of traditional leatherwork—like moccasins, mukluks, and mitts—incorporating Metis embroidery and Ojibwe florals into many of her designs in honor of her heritage and to preserve these Indigenous cultural practices.

But, she wasn’t always a culture bearer—or an artist. Hamilton fully awakened to her Indigenous roots in her adult years after seeing a photograph of her great-grandmother adorned in split-toe moccasins, ushering in a new mission to research, self-teach, and pass on the art of moccasin making and other Native artisanship.

A life of ever-evolving, creative expression followed this transformational journey of ancestral homecoming. Hamilton began exploring different art forms, finding passion, curiosity, and natural talent in portraiture—painting a diverse array of subjects, from animals to warriors to celebrities.

Biida’adoo – “Walking Her Path” is an opportunity to celebrate the power of Indigenous art and to experience the diverse ways in which culture, history, and individual expression intertwine, inviting viewers to appreciate the artist’s unique vision and voice.

American Women - Exhibition

American Women

EXHIBIT Late March – June 15, 2026

Over the past century, American women have transformed printmaking and ceramics into spaces of innovation, proving that traditional crafts carry powerful ideas while also preserving the collective narrative.

The artists in this exhibit challenged the relationship between art and craft while expanding who could be seen and heard. Representing a wide range of identities and experiences, these women pioneered new possibilities for their fields. Their work stands as an enduring reminder that innovation often emerges from voices once pushed to the margins.

We specifically honor Lillie Kleven and Margaret Harlowe for establishing BSU’s Print and Ceramics Collections, respectively. This exhibition wouldn’t be possible without them.

The Harlow | Kleven Collection is exhibited regularly in the Watermark Art Center with selected prints and ceramics loaned to other public areas on campus and in the community.

Drawing Right to Artist Success

This lowkey 5-week drawing class will help you to start at square one toward a successful project and is perfect for beginners. Drawing is the foundation for many artistic projects and helps you to have a “road-map” to where you are going. This class will focus on designing your idea into a cohesive direction, and making use of space, values, texture, lines, mark making and more. If you can draw it, you can paint it or sculpt it. The focus will be on drawing what you see rather than what you think you see. We will use a variety of media such as pencils, charcoal, conte crayons, and colored pencils. You will learn to set up a blank sheet of paper into spaces for your concept and add large shapes first and then small, arranging darks and lights into a pleasing finished project. We will start with simple shapes and work toward more diverse shapes.

Instructor: Jan Stenson

Date: Tuesdays, April 14 - May 12, 1:00-3:30pm

Member Fee: $145 Non-member Fee: $155

Rekindling the Joy of Creating

Now showing in the Bagley Public Library Gathering room.

Artist Talk: May 2nd @ 11am.

When you’re young, you just create with your heart. Putting marks on paper didn’t have to be beautiful or skillfully done. It was just a nice release of energy and imagination. I loved drawing and painting with markers, cheap paints, and any old paper.

I spent my adulthood as a graphic designer, creating solely on the computer and loved it but lost that kid spirit! Sometimes my mind works against my heart convincing me I’m not good enough to be an artist and there are long pauses when I don’t create. But I’m happier when my heart tells my mind to just shut up and paint! Watercolor suits my judgemental self. It makes me loosen up and just have fun with the flow of vibrant colors.

Creative expression can smooth out the knots and tangles of life’s curves. Art is so healing whether creating it or viewing it. It lights up my soul and I am grateful for the joy.

INSTRUCTOR BIO

“I have always been drawn to art and creating. During high school, my art teacher told me I would never make it in the art world, and I should give up that dream. I still painted and worked with wood carving, but I only shared with my mom, dad and sister.

“Fast forward to 2012 I lost my job when Pamida closed their doors. I really did not want to find another position in the retail world. As I pondered my future, I thought about what I had seen while my years working in retail and the one thing that stood out was the lack or actually the non-existence of the Ojibwe language in our area. I spoke with an elder and asked if it was alright for me to make welcome sign and garden signs in our language and sell them. He told me it was a fine idea and wished me luck on my new endeavor.  Boozhoo, Aaniin and Biindigen gave me my start. I have since moved to telling our stories and my dreams on canvas.

“The people I have met along this path have opened so many doors to other artistic mediums and styles. I was introduced to needle felting in 2016. I fell in love with the feel of the fibers in my hand and the idea that I could incorporate my painting style into felting.

“I have been commissioned to paint pieces for Bemidji State University, Cass Lake Bena High School, Leech Lake Head Start, White Earth Tribal College, Red Lake Tribal College and Leech Lake Tribal College. I have both a felted piece and a painted mural at Sprout Growers and Makers Market in Little Falls.

“I am now working on more mixed media art with incorporating bark, parfleche, sweet grass, fibers and paintings into one piece of art. To me art is about exploring, growing and invoking feelings in those that see your creations.

“I cannot wait to see what the future brings for expanding my art.” -Sharon Nordrum

River of Time – Celebrating the Work of Paula Swenson

Paula Swenson (1952 – 2026) was a beloved and well-known artist from the Bemidji, Minnesota Community.

“Paula enjoyed opening young minds to the vast world of art. She encouraged it. She planted it and nurtured it. She grew art into souls like flowers in a garden.” -family member

The exhibit at Watermark contains work from family/private collections, most that have never been previously exhibited.

WATERMARK EXHIBIT: May 8 to July 25, 2026 (some work for sale in SHOP 505)

CELEBRATION OF LIFE: May 15, 2 – 4:30 at the Loft in Downtown Bemidji.

“Painting has always been more than mere strokes of pigment on canvas for me—it’s a voyage through emotions and narratives, where each hue and texture comes together to create a symphony of feelings. My artistic odyssey has been a continuous exploration of the human experience, capturing its essence and translating it into visual stories that resonate with hearts and minds alike.”

“Through my art, I aim to weave connections between the tangible and the intangible, inviting viewers to embark on a journey of introspection and discovery. With each stroke of the brush, I endeavor to capture the essence of existence and share it with the world in vibrant, evocative hues.” – Paula Swenson (November 4, 1952 – January 28, 2026)

The Painterly Plate: Patterns & Mark-Making

Treat clay like a canvas in this two-part workshop that merges the joy of surface design with the utility of handmade ceramics. Moving beyond basic pottery, this class focuses on intentional mark-making and repeating pattern design. Students will create a coordinating pair of functional serving pieces (snack plates, small charcuterie boards, or trinket trays) using professional slab-building techniques. We will begin by rolling and compressing our slabs, then dive into a guided design session. Using curated underglaze palettes, students will learn to build "all-over" designs through rhythmic mark-making and layered patterns. No drawing experience is required—the focus is on texture, movement, and color. After a slow-dry and bisque fire, students return for a second session to refine their work and apply a professional clear glaze, ensuring a food-safe, gallery-quality finish. Ages 14 and up welcome.

Sharing Our LAPORTE Area Stories

Sharing Our LAPORTE Area Stories

You are invited to come share your story of living in this unique part of Northern Minnesota. The Northwoods Writers Group of Laporte has committed to helping our friends and neighbors record personal stories of themselves and their families to be collected in print form. A KICKOFF MEETING for the project will be held at the Lakeport Township Hall at the top of the hill in Laporte on Tuesday, March 31 at 7 PM.

Representatives of the Writers Group will be at the Lakeport Township Hall each Tuesday of April and May from 3-5 pm to help you get your story recorded. We will have available recording equipment (as well as a scanner and color copier for those who prefer to bring in hard copies of their writings and photos) to collect your memories of the Laporte area. For those of you who can’t make it to an afternoon time, volunteers will also be available the evenings of April 21 and 28, and May 19 at a time convenient for you.

While we are asking for individual anecdotes of living in and near Laporte, contributors are not limited to just one story.

When the project concludes, you will have the capability to get a copy of your story–and many others–on a flash drive or in print. Each contributor will be listed in the credits, along with an accompanying photo. We can take pictures or you can contribute a photo.

For the purposes of this project, the Laporte area is defined as SOUTH of Highway 2, WEST of Highway 371, NORTH of Highway 34, and EAST of Highway 71, as well as adjoining areas (especially if you and/or your family have close ties to the Laporte area).

Come to the KICKOFF MEETING to have a cookie and coffee while you hear more details about this community project. Call Winnie Dau Schmidt (218) 224-2516 if you are unable to get to this meeting or if you have questions.

YOUTH Woodland Pottery Class – Gaawaabaabiganikaag

YOUTH Woodland Pottery Class – Gaawaabaabiganikaag

Come and learn about this ancient art form, create a pot and experience the firing process.

Woodland pottery is a utilitarian art form over 3000years old. Often, clay is harvested from veins visible near rivers and construction dig sites. Suitable clay deposits have a distinct color and feel. The clay matrix is processed by sifting out rocks and organic matter and is then treated much the same as other pottery clays.

This is a 4-day workshop. Attend all four days: June 15, 16, 17, 20: noon – 4 PM each day.
The workshop is suitable for kids ages 10 and up (adults are welcome).
The workshop will be held at Rail River Folk School located at 303 Railroad Street SW, in Bemidji.
There is no charge to participate, but registration (below ↓) is required. Please submit separate registration forms for each participant.

If you have to cancel your registration, please notify us at as soon as possible. If you register after the class is full, we will contact you and place you on a waiting list. If you have any questions, contact Liseli Polivka at liseli@watermarkartcenter.org .

Day 1: Learn about the history of woodland pottery and start making your own pot

Day 2: Continue working on the first pot and learn how to process raw clay.

Day 3: Continue working on pots, learn about burnishing and other finishing touches.

Day 4: Learn how to fire work produced during the class and take home your creations!

About the artists:

Mother and daughter duo, Janet Klarer and Eliza Klarer, create pottery by hand. They learned from Janet’s mother, Judy Toppings, an artist, teacher, and activist who worked alongside her cousin, Carrie Estey Ortiz, to revitalize the lost art form. Janet and Eliza serve the young arts nonprofit, Manoomin Arts Initiative, whose goal is to support emerging and working artists of their community.

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota, through a grant from the Region 2 Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund.

Batik is a traditional Indonesian cloth that originated from the island of Java in the late 1800's and is still used today throughout Indonesia. It is said the word batik comes from the words Banyak Titik - meaning many dots.

Watercolor batik is done on rice paper. We will use regular paraffin wax melted in a very small crock pot. There is an inking of the drawing that is done with a black permanent marker. Regular watercolors are used and each step of the way waxed. Starting with whites. Then yellows etc. working from light to dark, It's a fun process. When finished with the waxing process, we iron out the wax using an iron and ironing board. The finished product is almost like stained glass when held up t o a light.

What to bring:

  • Watercolor paints

  • Watercolor brushes

  • Two sharpie pens, one extra fine and one fine.

  • Two foam core boards measuring 14 1/2“ x 20“ (simply buy the large board and cut it in half so that you have two boards that measure 14 1/2“ x 20“) You can use the thinner foam core boards or a bit thicker ones that are around a half inch thick… Simply your choice!

  • Container for water

  • One roll of paper towels.

Instructor will bring:

  • The special Rice paper, hairdryers, pots of hot wax, irons and ironing boards, Patterns

NEW! 3-D Poetry Workshop

NEW! 3-D Poetry Workshop

Expand your creative skillsets when you combine imagery, textured elements and/or handwritten items with prose to create 3D poems in a few hours with poet Micah McCutchan.

Adults. Saturday, April 25 from 10:30am to 2:30pm
Sliding scale registration:

  • $10- Living Lightly

  • $20- Full Fee

  • $30 – Pay it Forward

We will examine Collage Poetry and one additional form of 3D Poetry if time allows.

Collage poems are poems formed by using words cut from collage materials, like books and magazines. Poets may hunt down specific words or choose to create the poem as they go with the words they find. Collage poems often also include pieces of collaged imagery, textured elements, and/or handwritten elements. This style of poetry leaves much up to the artist to decide. It encourages both flexibility and the ability to incorporate non-word elements into poetry. Collaging can also be a deeply mindful practice and experience, as it allows for slowing down and repetitive processes like cutting and gluing.

Connecting Threads– Bemidji Area Weavers Guild Demo

Connecting Threads
– Bemidji Area Weavers Guild

EXHIBIT February 6 – April 25, 2026
RECEPTION  Friday, February 6, 5 to 7pm
