Naytahwaush Stories
NAYTAHWAUSH STORIES - Watermark Art Center, Bemidji
January through March, 2026
What if we focused on the "good" in us all? What if our reservation communities had a place to tell the good stories, share our images, and display our artwork? This winter, The Watermark Art Center in Bemidji will provide space to do those things. During the months of January-March you'll see and hear the stories from a little village in the heart of the White Earth Reservation. My home, the place I love. You can read more about this exhibit at the website dedicated to this show at www.naytahwaush.com
Landscape. Garden. Flower. by Dave Christensen
Now Showing at the Bagley Public Library Gallery Room
Artist Statement:
I am a semi retired Special Education Teacher and Landscape Designer. I have found great satisfaction in creating artwork that combines my personal experience with the organic forms and colors I have found in nature. As a self taught artist I push myself to my creative limits and approach my paintings with experimental enthusiasm. My primary medium “alcohol ink” gives me the freedom to create layers of ink and color often with unexpectef results. To achieve a textured apprearance, I may add additional mediums such as oils and acrylics on Yupo paper, glass, wood, plastic, and fabric. My hope is that my artwork is viewed with an open mind and that the viewer’s inner self recognized and appreciates the essence of a landscape, a colorful garden, or a delicate flower.

Watercolor Painting Class
You don’t need to be an artist to paint with watercolor.
You don’t need experience, talent, or even confidence—just explore your creativity in a relaxed atmosphere.
Refreshments included!
Expressive landscapes in watercolor - The damp paper method with Dan Mondloch
Dates: May 12 - 14, 2026
Time: 10 am - 4 pm
Location: Bagley Public Library
Cost: $150 (Member)
$175 (Non Member)
Class Limit: 15
Bring your own lunch
In this workshop, we will be wetting the front and back of the paper before starting. This allows for longer “open time” to blend colors, get soft edges, and maximize the amazing textures inherent to watercolor.
We will complete a minimum of 1 painting per day. I will provide photos for students, and each lesson will be done in a step by step approach, making it easier for students to follow along.
As a teacher, my goal is to see the light bulbs come on when students realize that painting isn’t as mysterious as it seems. Of course, it’s still challenging—which is part of the fun—but the visual language is something that I believe we all can learn. In my workshops, I try to teach shortcuts that allow students to make leaps in their understanding and how to avoid many of the common challenges of painting. There’s a charm to painting familiar aspects of our lives and subjects become much easier to paint when we learn to
simplify them into large shapes of value and color. With the big shapes planned and an accurate drawing established, it’s easier to loosen up and enjoy fluid washes, expressive brushwork, and bold color.
Each morning and afternoon, I begin with a demonstration to illustrate the day’s lesson, leaving a large majority of the time for students to work. If time allows, I will lead a late afternoon critique, which are often very helpful and encouraging for students. Early in the week, we will focus on simplifying scenes into large
shapes and value tones. These large value shapes help students understand the sequence and order of how a successful painting is created.

Fun with Yupo Workshop with Jim Turner (FULL)
Dates: April 15-17, 2026
Time: 10 am – 4 pm
Location: Bagley Public Library Community Room
Class Size Limit: 10
CLASS IS FULL
Cost: $150
This workshop is for anyone interested in exploring the unique characteristics of YUPO. YUPO is a smooth inorganic (plastic) surface that accepts paint in a very different way than paper. Because the paint sits on the surface instead of being absorbed, it flows, mixes and can give a very fluid abstract “liquid” look to washes that can be very appealing (and frustrating, if you are trying to “control” it.) The surface also allows colors to be more intense, giving a stained glass look that is amazing, and makes lifting easy, allowing a push-pull method of composition similar to working with opaque paints.
This workshop is intended to give you a variety of ways to approach the unique characteristics of YUPO. We will take advantage of the abstract, flowing ‘liquid’ look of wet in wet application and experiment with stamping, texturing, lifting and even texturing with foam rollers. We will talk about design and how to go from the crazy accidental abstraction of YUPO to finished work. We will also talk about “taming” YUPO to do representational work, flattening washes, graded washes etc.
Come if you are a beginner and want to have fun playing with paint, if you are an accomplished watercolorist who wants to explore a new surface, or anyone in between who wants to expand their horizons and try something new.
I turn to YUPO when I want to “play” with watercolor and just have fun. The participant can expect to finish at least a couple completed or nearly completed paintings in the three days.

Wired Jewelry
Wire Jewelry Workshop with Cheryl Bannes | Cost: $25 register today, Only 10 spots
Wire jewelry grows out of ancient traditions of personal adornment, trade, and craft. Across cultures, copper and other soft metals were shaped by hand into functional and symbolic objects- pins, fasteners, talisman, and decorative forms meant to be worn daily. Simple loops, twists, and wraps became visual language, carrying meaning through repetition and form. This workshop draws from that lineage, using accessible materials and traditional techniques to create wearable pieces in both beauty and purpose.
Create simple, handcrafted jewelry using copper wire and beads. In this hands-on beginner-friendly workshop, participants will make a pin and either a necklace or bracelet while learning basic wire-wrapping techniques, tools, and wire types.
All materials and tools are provided.

Batik is a traditional Indonesian cloth that originated from the island of Java in the late 1800's and is still used today throughout Indonesia. It is said the word batik comes from the words Banyak Titik - meaning many dots.
Watercolor batik is done on rice paper. We will use regular paraffin wax melted in a very small crock pot. There is an inking of the drawing that is done with a black permanent marker. Regular watercolors are used and each step of the way waxed. Starting with whites. Then yellows etc. working from light to dark, It's a fun process. When finished with the waxing process, we iron out the wax using an iron and ironing board. The finished product is almost like stained glass when held up t o a light.
What to bring:
Watercolor paints
Watercolor brushes
Two sharpie pens, one extra fine and one fine.
Two foam core boards measuring 14 1/2“ x 20“ (simply buy the large board and cut it in half so that you have two boards that measure 14 1/2“ x 20“) You can use the thinner foam core boards or a bit thicker ones that are around a half inch thick… Simply your choice!
Container for water
One roll of paper towels.
Instructor will bring:
The special Rice paper, hairdryers, pots of hot wax, irons and ironing boards, Patterns
