Queering Indigeneity
Beginning in 2023, the M has been in partnership with Penny Kagigebi (White Earth Ojibwe/direct descendant) to develop "Queering Indigeneity," a multi-year, multi-generational project focusing on 2-Spirit, Native queer, gender expansive vision in great diversity and celebration.
In seeking out and amplifying voices of Indigenous artists and culture bearers, the M, guided by Kagigebi, hopes to influence both the types of artists who are supported, seen, and centered at the museum, and to show both Indigenous and non-Indigenous visitors a more comprehensive, complicated, and true story of Minnesotan art and artists.
"Queering Indigeneity" will open at the M in the Nancy and John Lindahl Gallery on September 18th, 2025 featuring 16 native artists from the Upper Midwest: Sharon Day, Ryan Young, Delia Touché, Awanigiizhik Bruce, Niibawi Ajijaak, Awanaabe Syverson, Zoe Allen, Naawakamigookwe Lera Hephner, Noah Polk, Madeline Treuer, Chewie Mason, Asin-Gwiiwizens, Sav Jonsa, Giiwedin, Nick Metcalf, and Penny Kagigebi.
Refugia: the seasonal Pond Project -
Watermark Art Center welcomes textile artist Kristen Anderson on October 3 with an opening reception for her exhibit "Refugia: the seasonal Pond Project" from 5 to 7pm. Anderson will give a brief artist presentation at 5:30. The exhibit will be on display through January 30, 2026.
Just as pockets of rich memory may emerge amid a human mind in cognitive decline, remnants of ecosystem diversity that retain resilience amid changing conditions are referred to as ecological "refugia". Anderson uses tapestries, poems and vignettes to illustrate this comparison.
For Anderson, creating the Refugia series was about finding a path forward to cope with difficult and emerging circumstances, both personally and environmentally. It is about learning to relate as a caregiver to both a special ecosystem and to a changing person. Like a mind that is experiencing the roadblocks of disease, the seasonal ponds are at great risk due to weakened wetland laws, development, and a changing climate.
There is no cost to attend this event. Watermark is accessible and there is no fee to view exhibits or to visit the retail gallery during regular hours: Monday – Saturday from 10am to 5pm. 505 Bemidji Avenue N. in Bemidji, MN. 218-444-7570.

Poets should prepare three original SLAM! poems – one for each round, new in the last three years, never previously performed at a state or local event, and each under three minutes reading time.
A poetry slam is a competitive art event in which poets perform spoken word poetry before a live audience and a panel of judges. Poets are not required to memorize their poems and are welcome to use notes.
While formats can vary, slams are often loud and lively, with audience participation, cheering and dramatic delivery.
Judges, selected from the audience, give each reading a score on a scale of 1 to 10. The poets with highest scores advance to a second, then third round. The top three in the final round of a regular slam win cash prizes. Prize money varies.
Thanks to Bemidji Area Arts Endowment and True North Health Care for sponsoring our 2025-26 season.

Legacy Lectures: Drawn from Here (With Kent Estey)
Legacy Lectures: Drawn from Here Featuring Multi-Medium Anishinaabe Artist & Author Kent Estey
Tuesday, November 18 | 4:30-6:30 PM Artist Lecture at 5:15 PM Kaddatz Galleries, Fergus Falls | FREE and open to all with light refreshments provided
Step into the vibrant world of Kent Estey, an enrolled member of the White Earth Nation of Ojibwe in Northwestern Minnesota, known for his bold and bright use of colors that captivate viewers and celebrate the beauty of his surroundings.
Kent's lineage includes many traditional artists where black-ash basketry, beading, birch-bark, and fiber artistry were everyday occurrences in his home. Today, he channels this rich heritage through his preferred art forms of acrylic, oil, and ink painting, where land, sky, and water come alive through his use of vibrant colors that reflect his feelings and emotions.
In Kent's Own Words: "I paint what I see every day. It's all I know and what I know best, so my paintings are about this piece of land, this sky, the colors and feelings as I walk through my gardens."
Kent's work has been exhibited across the region, from Duluth to Minneapolis and St. Paul to Wahpeton, North Dakota, and was recently featured in the Detroit Institute of Arts' Contemporary Anishinaabe Art: A Continuation Exhibit. His talent has been recognized through the Minnesota State Arts Board Creative Support for Individuals grant, the Region 2 Arts Council Artist Fellowship for 2023-24, and the Anishinaabe Artist Fellowship for 2025-26.
Come meet this accomplished educator and artist who lives and works in his studio in Naytahwaush, Minnesota, and experience how he captures the essence of place through color and emotion.
About the Series: "Legacy Lectures: Drawn from Here" honors the legacy of Charles Beck by showcasing the rich artistic talent that has emerged from our region and exploring how these artists live out their artistic calling while maintaining meaningful ties to their communities of origin. We hope this offering inspires our long-time patrons and young budding artists alike!
FREE and open to all with light refreshments provided

Refugia: the seasonal Pond Project - Opening Reception
