For The Love Of Trees- Sue Rauschenfels

For The Love Of Trees- Sue Rauschenfels

Sue Rauschenfels’ “For The Love of Trees” paintings and mixed media collages are created from the heart and rooted, grown and developed from a childhood spent exploring outdoor play in the woods while building strong lifelong relationships with her 6 sisters and neighborhood friends.

Her rendering of this new trees series using vibrant color, mark making, textural elements of collage and mixed media to tell their story, is her way of honoring and thanking them for their gifts- impacting people positively socially, mentally, and supporting healthy human interaction.

Sue uses vibrant colors, markmaking, and varied textures in her tree paintings by incorporating mixed media and storytelling elements. With this new series she has immersed herself and experimented with new art mediums using oil and cold wax. Her watercolor birch trees on masa paper using black Sumi ink is a technique she adores and has pushed the texture and abstract representation forward. She often uses collage papers, many handmade in her acrylic/mixed media paintings capturing a bold, vibrant spiritual story.

We all know that the survival of human beings is oxygen and is made available by trees. We have all heard the science as to why trees are life. But beyond that, Sue believes trees have an amazing power to impact people positively socially and mentally. They calm and rejuvenate our senses and refresh our souls in healing ways. Often as individuals we seek to surround ourselves with trees to recharge and center ourselves. We travel in groups to forests and parks to socialize, connect, and strengthen our relationships. Human connection with trees is a vital component to sustaining life and creating supportive healthy human interaction.

It is evident that Sue often paints her trees in a row, together standing tall. As people, we too need to stand together, heal and deepen our relationships to protect each other and our communities to sustain healthy social human connections.

This exhibit was made possible in part by the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council through an individual Artist Project Grant FY24 and by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from Arrowhead Regional Arts Council thanks to an appropriation from the Minnesota State Legislature’s general and Arts and Cultural Heritage funds.

Wayne Gudmundson: Nemeth Art Center

“A native to the landscape that I explore, my photographs reflect an ongoing survey of the Midwest region that express the sense of a particular place and of a particular vision. Over the years I’ve spent the majority of my time in the wonderful openness of North Dakota, and of late in northern Minnesota on the White Earth Reservation. I should ass that I’ve explored the stark landscape of Iceland where my ancestors lived, the Sonoran desert where I spent my winters, and the Burgundy region of France where my daughter lives.” Wayne Gudmundson’s work is in the permanent collection of many major museums including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, the Reykjavik Museum of Photography, the Canadian Center for Architecture in Montreal, and the Plains Art Museum in Fargo. Divest or Die: “Smart Wars” Artists Depict Battle to Protect Earth

Written by Andrew Neef & Rachel Weiland for Unicorn Riot June 22nd, 2018 (Submitted by the Artist, Rory Wakemup)

Minneapolis, MN- Every summer in the Twin Cities, artists bring to life the NOrthern Spark art festival, which is free to the public and lasts throughout the night in downtown Minneapolis. One of the opening events at this years festival, called “Smart Wars: Divest or Die”, brought together indigenous youth and artists in a “bedazzling” performance of “funkavism” (fun activism.)

Through performance art, Smart Wars displays a story of a shared indigenous reality where the human family joins forces to protect the water against destructive corporate greed. The performance begins with two sides facing one another in a battle among blue streaming banners which represent the water. After an extensive display of light-saber warfare to the beat of indigenous drumming, the two sides realize their common enemy is the tyrannical corporations, which is represented by a black “oil snake.” The two sides then band together and cut the head off the black snake and begin a round dance together, with the crowd joining in. Throughout the performance, the artists illustrate the immediate need to protect and share the Earth with all species, and what the artists believe is the path forward toward a harmonious co-existence. iPhone Artistry

iPhone Artistry

Watermark Art Center will hold an open house for photographer, William Petersen on October 4 from 5 to 7pm. His digital photography exhibit "iPhone Artistry" will be on display from October 4 through December 28, 2024. On October 24 (times to be determined), he will give a talk on his methods of working with phone cameras.

Petersen's first camera was a Kodak Duaflex box camera given to him by his parents when he was eleven. The film was 620 roll film in black-and-white only. From that very beginning, he knew the camera was able to capture more than “reality”, and it allowed him to share his "reality" of imagery.

After a few photography classes in college, his photography took a necessary back seat to his medical career until 1999 when he returned to his love affair with photography in a serious way. This period was also the advent of electronic cameras and digital "dark rooms". Initially he rejected much of that, but soon realized that the masters of black and white photography perfected their skills with decades of experimentation in a traditional darkroom. He soon decided to embrace photographic computer tools that he could learn in a fraction of the time necessary and still achieve amazing results.

He is grateful to have seen all the changes to photography methods that have occurred throughout his lifetime. Technology has allowed him to continue to share his view of "image reality" with others.

There is no charge to attend the open house. For more information regarding events, classes and exhibits visit watermarkartcenter.org or call 218-444-7570. Watermark galleries are accessible and open to the public Monday - Saturday from 10 to 5pm. Watermark is located at 505 Bemidji Avenue N. in Bemidji, Minnesota.

Two Rooms by Lee Blessing

Two Rooms by Lee Blessing

Kitchen Sink Productions presents: Two Rooms by Lee Blessing.

The “two rooms” of the title are depicted as one on this simple stage. The first, a windowless cubicle in Beirut, where Michael, an American hostage, is being held by Arab terrorists. And the second, a room in his home in the United States, which his wife, Lainie, has stripped of furniture so that, at least symbolically, she can share in his nightmare.

A reporter, Walker, tries to prod Lainie into taking umbrage at what he labels “government ineptitude and inaction,” while a representative from the States Department, Ellen, attempts to treat the matter of Michael’s kidnapping with dispassionate efficiency and professional detachment. Lainie must make the impossible decision of whether to publicly expose the State Department for their effortless attempt to rescue her husband, at the risk of putting Michael’s life in further danger, or to remain silent while nothing is done to save him.

The class will work from an image supplied by the instructor, and students may also bring an 8x10 photo of their own to work from when finished with the class image (any type of portrait image is fine, including 3/4 poses or those where the eyes are not fully visible.) A supply list will be provided. Please bring your own lunch and beverages.

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through grants from the Region 2 Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund.

Applications will be scored on the artistic quality of the work, the artistic merit of the artist, and on the proposal.

Through such support, the R2AC aims to raise the profile of artistic work in the region and create a strong community of Anishinaabe Arts Initiative Fellows. Fun with Yupo Workshop

to Mar 20

Fun with Yupo Workshop

Class fee of $125, class is limited to 8. This workshop is for anyone interested in exploring the unique characteristics of YUPO. YUPO is a smooth inorganic (plastic) surface that accepts paint in a very different way than paper. Because the paint sits on the surface instead of being absorbed, it flows, mixes, and can give a very fluid abstract "liquid" lok to washes that can be very appealing (and frustrating if you are trying to "control" it.) The surface also allows colors to be more intense, giving a stained glass look that is amazing, and makes lifting easy, allowing a push-pull method of composition similar to working with opaque paints. This workshop is intended to give you a variety of ways to approach the unique characteristics of YUPO. We will take advantage of the abstract, flowing 'liquid' look of wet in wet application and experiment with stamping, texturing, lifting, and even texturing with foam rollers. We will talk about design and how to go from the crazy accidental abstraction of YUPI to finished work. We will also talk about 'taming' YUPO to do representational work, flattening washes, graded washes, etc. Come if you are a beginner and want to have fun playing with paint, or if you are an accomplished watercolorist who wants to explore a new surface, or anyone in between who wants to expand their horizons and try something new. I turn to YUPO when I want to "play" with watercolor and just have fun. The participant can expect to finish at least a couple completed or nearly completed paintings in the three days. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

Eligible Proposals
Artists Engage Community grants support the creation, production, and presentation of high quality arts activities that help instill the arts into the community and public life in our region. Eligible grant proposals must connect and engage with audiences, participants, students, and/or communities to provide new and/or expanded arts programming to residents of our region’s counties, and/or remove barriers that audiences may have to accessing arts activities. These grants offer funding for a variety of artist led arts activities that will benefit the residents of Beltrami, Hubbard, Clearwater, Lake of the Woods, or Mahnomen counties. Arts activities proposed for funding must be artist led, accessible by the public, and connect with community members through the arts. Activity must begin within 12 months of the earliest start date, and must be completed by June 30, 2025.

Eligible Uses:

  • Participatory arts projects

  • Arts classes, camps, or workshops

  • Public art projects – murals, sculpture walks/trails, concerts in public parks, etc.

  • Arts performances – concerts, theatrical productions, dance performances, film screenings, etc.

  • Arts presentations – readings, exhibitions, artist talks, etc.

  • Arts festivals

Is your grant project eligible?  Check out our eligibility section: Artists Engage Community Grant Eligibility Requirements – If you can answer true to all the statements, then you should be eligible to apply. If you answer false to one of the statements, please contact us to discuss your eligibility.

The Grant Application
The online grant application will ask questions about demographics which we use for reporting to the Minnesota State Arts Board (see our Data Privacy Policy), and questions based on our scoring criteria – Artist Qualifications & Artistic Vision for the Project, Arts Access Provided by the Project, Community Impact and Evaluation of the Project, and Ability to Carry Out the Project. There are also pieces needed for the grant application that you should gather before you apply, such as work samples (Work Sample Submission Policy), resume, and a list of all project costs.

Budget Guidelines
IMPORTANT FOR ALL APPLICANTS: Project specific costs incurred and paid prior to a project’s Earliest Start Date will make a project ineligible for funding. Read about this and more:
R2AC Budget Guidelines

Outcomes and Evaluation Methods
Because we ask you to engage community in this grant, we want you to set an outcome and a means to measure whether you successfully achieved that outcome. An outcome should describe a change in knowledge, skill, attitude, awareness, behavior, or condition in your target audience. Effective project outcomes are specific, measurable, and can be reasonably achieved by the proposed activity. It is important that you measure and document progress made in achieving the proposed outcome for the target audience. You may wish to consult Getting Started with Program Evaluation – a guide published by the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies for information on outcomes evaluation.

A Note on Grant Awards as Taxable Income
If awarded, you will be asked to fill out a W-9 tax form and the grant award will be considered extra income for you in that tax year. Because this is a grant for individuals, you cannot shift the tax burden to any limited liability companies/corporations you may own for your arts business, but you can use a fiscal sponsor. A fiscal sponsor is a nonprofit entity that lends you their nonprofit status and provides some financial oversight for funds received from a grant award. Often they charge a flat fee or request a percentage of granted funds for this service.  If awarded, your grant award check would be made out to your fiscal sponsor, they would relay the funds to you in one large check or series of smaller payouts for your each of your expenses as you ask for/report them. The granted funds would be part of the fiscal sponsor’s tax reporting, removing the tax burden from you. You would want an agreement (sample fiscal sponsor agreement form) in place to set the responsibilities for each of you.

Season/Series Arts Grant Intention
This grant program was created to help arts organizations, and other nonprofit entities that do a high volume of arts activities or arts programming, by allowing them to fill out one grant application to fund many events instead of multiple grant applications to fund each individual event. It is our hope that this will save valuable staff/volunteer time and effort in applying for our funding and subsequently filling out all the follow up information connected to a funded grant.

Each Season/Series Arts Support Grant assists an organization in funding the creation, production, and presentation of two or more arts activities to benefit the residents of Minnesota’s Beltrami, Hubbard, Clearwater, Lake of the Woods, and Mahnomen counties. Proposals that include public art, arts festivals, engagement of guest artists, artists-in-residence programs, educational performances, educational arts field trips, arts training or workshops, exhibitions, presentations, or performances will be considered. These proposals must show a commitment to developing new/and or expanded arts programming from what the applicant organization has presented in the past. Additional attention should be paid to one or more of the following:

  • removing barriers that audiences may have to accessing arts activities

  • developing knowledge, skills, and understanding for the arts for Minnesotans of all ages

  • representing through the arts the diverse ethnic and cultural arts traditions in our state

  • building bridges between Minnesotans through arts and culture.

Eligible Uses:

  • Arts festivals

  • Engagement of guest artists

The online grant application will ask questions about demographics which we use for reporting to the Minnesota State Arts Board (see our Data Privacy Policy), and questions based on our scoring criteria. There are also pieces needed for the grant application that you should gather before you apply, such as photos or links for your 4 qualifying arts activities, resumes or bios of key staff, volunteers, or participating artists, work samples of participating artists, timelines of projects, and a list of all costs for the funded arts activities or programming.

John O'Conor and Eric Olson in Recital

General Admission of $20. Seniors $15. K-12 and college students free (with proof of ID)

“A pianist of un-bounding sensitivity” (Gramophone)

“He represents a vanishing tradition that favors inner expression and atmosphere over showmanship and bravura.” (Chicago Tribune)

“Impeccable technique and musicality…it would be hard to imagine better performances.” (Sunday Times - London)

The Irish pianist John O’Conor has been gathering wonderful reviews for his masterly playing over forty years. Having studied in his native Dublin, in Vienna with Dieter Weber and been tutored by the legendary Willhelm Kempff his unanimous 1st Prize at the International Beethoven Piano Competition in Vienna in 1973 opened the door to a career that has brought him all around the world.

He has performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras including the London Symphony, Royal Phillharmonic, Czech Philharmonic, Vienna Symphony, l’Orchestre National de France, the NHK Orchestra in Japan and the Atlanta, Cleveland, San Francisco, Dallas, Montreal, and Detroit Symphonies in North America. He has given concerts in many of the world’s most famous halls including Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center in New York, the Kennedy Center in Washington, the Wigmore Hall and South Bank Centre in London, the Musikverein in Vienna, the Dvorak Hall in Prague, the Seoul Arts Centre, and the Bunka Kaikan in Tokyo. He enjoys collaborating in Lieder recitals and performing chamber music with many instrumentalists and ensembles such as the Cleveland, Tokyo, Vanbrugh, Vermeer, Takacs, Vogler and Yink Quartets.

John O’Conor first gained widespread attention in the USA in 1986 with the release of his first volume of Beethoven Sonatas on the Telarc label. He went on to record the complete Sonatas and these were issued as a box set in 1994. CD Review described Mr. O’Connor’s performances as “recordings of the highest calibre and Beethoven playing at its best” and went on to say “by now he should be recognized as the world’s premier Beethoven interpreter.” Mr. O’Connor has made more than 20 recordings for Telarc, including the complete Beethoven Bagatelles (cited by the New York Times as the best recordings of these works) and Mozart Concertos with Sir Charles Mackerras and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. He has also recorded the complete Nocturnes, Sonatas and Concertos of the Irish Composer John Field.

In 2007 and 2008 he recorded the complete Piano Concertos of Beethoven with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Andreas Delfs and these have been greeted with great acclaim. In the past two years he has released three new CDs on the Steinway label, one of Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations and two of Haydn Sonatas. He has also been featured on tonebase.com with videos on teaching and discussing Beethoven and Haydn Sonatas. Last summer he recorded a CD of the complete Beethoven Cello Sonatas with the Irish cellist Ai’bhe McDonagh.

Prof. O’Connor is regarded as one of the most important piano teachers in the world today. He is Distinguished Artist Residence, Professor of Music and Chair of the Piano Division at Shenandoah Conservatory in Virginia, Professor of Piano at the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, Distinguished Visiting Artist at the TU Dublin Conservatoire of Music and Visiting Professor at Showa University in Japan. His students have won many international prizes and he is in great demand for masterclasses and as a juror at the most prestigious International Piano Competitions worldwide.
