Attention Native Artists! Come to a FREE day-long workshop on developing your business as an artist presented by First Peoples Fund in collaboration with Region 2 Arts Council.

This workshop will assist Native Artists in

Expressing individual vision and values
Defining the foundation of one’s own business
Determining arts marketing, business and financial management abilities
Understanding and using planning and budgeting tools
Developing key business skills

Choose from two dates and two locations:

9:00 – 4:30 Friday October 14, 2011 at Leech Lake Tribal College in Cass Lake, MN. A light lunch will be provided.

These grants support three key areas: Arts Activities and Arts Access, Education, and Cultural Heritage. Individual artists can apply for grants up to $3,000 and organizations can apply for grants up to $6,000. GRANT DEADLINE: August 16^th, 2011.

The R2AC/McKnight Career Development Fellowship is open to established artists in all disciplines who show a commitment to their career. This 18-month fellowship provides the opportunity for career development experiences that will add depth and advancement to any artistic career. Two $6,000 fellowships will be awarded per year. GRANT DEADLINE: September 14, 2011.

The Arts Project grant writing session will be open to any non-profit organization, school (including community education offices), and units of government. These grants offer funding for a variety of art projects including costs related to performances or exhibitions, engagement of guest artists, and artists-in-residence. Organizations can apply for grants up to $1,500. GRANT DEADLINE: September 14^th, 2011.

The Individual Artist grant writing session will be open to artists in all art disciplines. These grants offer funding for costs associated with the exhibition, performance, or production of a creative work; purchase of materials or equipment necessary for a creative work; educational opportunities; mentorships; and proposals for career-enhancing projects or opportunities. Artists can apply for grants up to $1,000. GRANT DEADLINE: October 5^th, 2011.

The Community Arts Support grant writing session will be open to any arts organizations. These grants are two-year awards that help provide some measure of funding stability for arts organizations so that their energy can be better focused on increasing the quality and availability of the arts to their communities. Arts organizations can apply for grants up to $6,000 depending on the their annual revenues. GRANT DEADLINE: February 15^th, 2012.

FALL ROUND GRANT DEADLINES: Arts and Cultural Heritage Grant deadline:August 16th; Arts Project Grants and Career Development Fellowships: September 14th, and Individual Artist Grants: October 6th, Community Arts Support Grants: Feb 15th (one round every two years). R2AC and the State Shutdown

Our Office:

Region 2 Arts Council, a nonprofit organization that receives funding from the MN State Legislature and the McKnight Foundation, will remain open for business for as long as possible, utilizing cash reserves.

Our Grants:

The upcoming Arts and Cultural Heritage Grant deadline of August 16, 2011 will remain unchanged. However, if the MN state shutdown lasts more than a few weeks, or if the arts budget is drastically cut, it may impact the amount of R2AC funds available and the timing of grant payments for state funded grant programs in the new fiscal year. Payments for the Arts and Cultural Heritage Grants and Arts Project Grants awarded this fall, for example, are dependent on the outcome of the MN state budget.

In Short:

We encourage you to apply for the August and September grant deadlines with the understanding that if the budget impasse continues for any length of time, there may be delays in receiving payments for grant projects awarded in the fall.

Region 2 Arts Council Seeking Board Members from Mahnomen and Lake of the Woods Counties

Region 2 Arts Council is currently seeking Board members from Lake of the Woods and Mahnomen Counties to fill a two-year term vacancy beginning in July/August 2011. Deadline for applications is August 1, 2011.

Those who feel that the visual, performing and literary arts are an important contribution to the quality of life in Minnesota are encouraged to consider serving on the board of Region 2 Arts Council. The board is responsible for planning, setting policy and reviewing and awarding grants. It meets seven times per year in Bemidji on the third Monday of the month. Members are reimbursed for travel.

Region 2 Arts Council is one of eleven arts councils in the state of Minnesota and awards over $230,000 annually for art activities in the five counties of Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Lake of the Woods and Mahnomen. The council operates with funds from the Minnesota State Legislature, the Arts and Cultural Heritage Legacy Funds and the McKnight Foundation.

R2AC Awards Individual Artist Grants

Region 2 Arts Council (R2AC) recently awarded $7,700 through the Individual Artist Grants Program, designed for artists at various stages in their careers. Grants of up to $1,000 are awarded for expenses associated with projects or opportunities that contribute significantly to an artist’s creative growth or career advancements. R2AC Individual Artist Grants are funded through an appropriation from the McKnight Foundation. The grant recipients included:

Cody Bartz, Bemidji, received $695 to create a set of prints to exhibit at the Wild Hare Bistro in Bemidji, MN.

Randy Bauer, Blackduck, received $535 to record a 10-song CD he can sell and use for self-promotion.

Candice Billups, Bemidji, was awarded $975 to assist her in creating an online portfolio website for sales and promotion.

Terry Honstead, Bemidji, received $1,000 to purchase custom printed cards with envelopes and clear plastic sleeves featuring prints of her paintings for self-promotion.

Karissa Korbel, Bemidji, was awarded $1,000 to gather a band of local musicians to produce a jazz CD.

Kevin McColley, Pinewood, received $895 to develop mail and internet promotions for his novel, “The Moon Song”, recently sold to Unbridled Books for publication.

James Miller, Bemidji, was awarded $1,000 to assist in defraying the costs of a custom made gourd banjo, supplies, recording costs, and classes with a professional mentor for the purpose of composing historical ballads and instrumental pieces to be used in the soundtrack of a local documentary that celebrates the exploration and preservation of the Mississippi river headwaters.

Nora Peterson, Bemidji, was awarded $1,000 to professionally frame and mat ten watercolor and ink paintings and create five giclee prints of each piece of artwork to exhibit and market at Dunn Brothers Coffee in Bemidji in December 2010.

Eve Sumsky, Tenstrike, was awarded $600 to have 15 oak shelves made to display her basketry at shows and exhibitions.

No Risk Workshop Funding Available

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA — Marion Hunziker-Larsen, a Redwood City, CA fiber artist, models braiding techniques for participants at the Braids, Cord-making and Knotting Techniques workshop she conducted in Bemidji this past spring. Bemidji macrame artist, Dawn Standera, organized the No Risk Workshop weekend.

The Region 2 Arts Council invites individual artists and arts organizations in our five county region to propose No Risk Workshop ideas for direct funding. A No Risk Workshop is a learning experience for adult artists. It is open to the public and conducted at no financial risk to the organizing party.

In the past, area artists have conducted workshops on topics such as jewelry making, painting techniques, poetry, non-fiction, rosemauling, basket-weaving, and tatting. Groups have brought visiting artists to the region for workshops such as cord-making and knotting techniques for fiber artists, producing Shakespeare plays with non-professional actors, and painting with watercolors.

If you are a musician and always dreamed of conducting a song-writing workshop or if you are a puppeteer and know others would benefit from your expertise, organizing a no risk workshop that you would lead, might be a nice way to share your talents and create some personal income. Region 2 Awards $48,520 in Arts and Cultural Heritage Grants

aaron tank — Aaron Tank, a Bemidij based musician, will use his grant award to conduct five song-sharing workshops and folk music performances across Region 2.

Region 2 Arts Council (R2AC) recently awarded $48,520 through the Arts and Cultural Heritage Grants Program, to individual artists and non-profits in Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Lake of the Woods and Mahnomen counties. The funds will be used to create opportunities for arts access, arts education, and building bridges between Minnesotans and were made available through an appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund passed by Minnesota voters on November 4, 2008. The grant recipients included:

The Bagley City Council, Bagley received $6,000 to assist with the purchase of a metal sculpture, created by a local artist Jay Jones, depicting historical themes that relate to the city.

Depot Preservation Alliance, Baudette was awarded $6,000 to obtain the services of a mural artist to research, design, and produce a mural in the Baudette Depot which will reflect the cultural heritage of the region in the early 1900’s.

The Region 2 Arts Council is sponsoring a carving workshop, “Team Totem,” presented by Paul Albright. Attendees will learn the traditional totem pole process and assist in carving a totem pole. The 2-day workshop will take place October 15 and 16 from 12:00 – 4:00 p.m. each day at 28348 230^th Street in Akely, MN.

Paul Albright is a well-known sculptor and woodworker He has been a full time artist for twenty years. Paul’s wood sculptures have ranged from hand carved smaller detailed pieces to large power tooled works. He resides and works in a wooded country setting just west of Akeley, MN. Totem building is something special in the field of sculpture. In the class offered, Paul will assist you in designing and making your own section of a totem. Once finished, each piece will be re-assembled to form the totem. No previous experience is necessary and the tools will be provided (or bring your own).
