Work of Art: Business Skills for Artists,
a Professional Development opportunity for artists living in Beltrami, Lake of the Woods, Hubbard, Mahnomen and Clearwater counties

Region 2 Arts Council, in collaboration with Springboard for the Arts and Lake Region Arts Council, is excited to announce a new series of Work of Art: Business Skills for Artists workshops. Funding for the series is made possible by the voters of Minnesota, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund and support of the West Central Initiative Fund.

Workshops will be available exclusively to artists and creative entrepreneurs in the Lakes Region Arts Council and Region 2 Arts Council service areas:  Becker, Clay, Douglas, Grant, Otter Tail, Pope, Stevens, Traverse, Wilkin, Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Lake of the Woods and Mahnomen counties.

“We are delighted to be able to partner with the Lakes Region Arts Council and Region 2 Arts Council to bring these workshops to artists in our area,” says Springboard Rural Program Director Michele Anderson. “Right now it is especially important for artists to have the skills, connection, and community needed to build their practices and their creative businesses, and these workshops will provide that opportunity.”

Workshops will be held via Zoom and participation via computer is recommended, however, joining the workshop by phone is also an option if internet or computer access is a barrier. All workshops will include closed captioning services. Participants are invited to register for the whole series or for specific workshops relevant to their needs.

Arts Access Grants for Small Towns

Maximum Award: $6,000
Deadline: April 15, 2018 by 11:59 pm

These grants can support creation, production, and presentation of high-quality arts activities, as well as projects that help overcome barriers to accessing high-quality arts activities, and projects that help instill the arts into the community and public life in our region. These grants offer funding for a variety of arts projects and programming including costs associated with public art, arts festivals, exhibitions, presentations, or performances. Organizations or groups in towns with a population under 2,000 can apply for grants up to $6,000 to fund projects that would benefit the residents of Beltrami, Hubbard, Clearwater, Lake of the Woods, or Mahnomen Counties.

R2AC Invites Public Feedback on the Arts in Clearwater County


On Monday, October 29 from 7:00-8:00 p.m., Region 2 Arts Council is convening a Listening Session at Clearwaters Life Center, 256 2nd Ave. NW in Clearbrook, MN to gather community input on the needs of artists and arts organizations in Clearwater county.

Schools, city/county government, non-profit organizations, artists, art organizations and community members are encouraged to attend and to give feedback on Region 2 Arts Council’s grant programs, workshops and other arts activities. This is an opportunity to discuss your thoughts and ideas on how to better meet the needs of artists, art organizations and the arts in your communities.

Register Now! R2AC FREE Grant Writing Workshops in July

With a new round of grant deadlines approaching, Region 2 Arts Council (R2AC) will offer free grant writing workshops for organizations, schools, and units of government and individuals within the five counties of Region 2.

Workshops for organizations will cover  Arts and Cultural Heritage Grants (Aug 16 deadline) and Arts Project Grants (Sept 12 deadline). Special attention will be given to Outcome-Based Evaluations for Arts and Cultural Heritage grants.

Workshops for individual artists will cover Arts and Cultural Heritage Grants (Aug 16 deadline), R2AC/McKnight Career Development Fellowships (Sept 12 deadline), Individual Artist Grants (Oct 4 deadline), and Anishinaabe Arts Initiative Grants (Oct 3 deadline).

Visual Artist Alice Blessing will give an artist talk at 2:45 pm
about her children’s book illustrations and paintings.  This Meet the Artist talk is the capstone event of Blessing’s 2011 R2AC/McKnight Career Development Fellowship.  Blessing was one of two Region 2 Artists to receive a $6000 Career Development Fell0wship in 2011.

Also at Blank Canvas: Don’t miss Park Rapids area artist Bickey Bender as Featured artist this month, as well as enjoy the work of Alice Blessing other guest artists for the month of June.

June 10, 12-14     Gayle Highberg Exhibit
Visual Artist Gayle Highberg will exhibit her acrylic, watercolor and mixed media work at The Fireside in Bagley, MN.  Highberg was a 2011 recipient of a McKnight Funded R2AC Individual Artist Grant giving her the opportunity to mentor with local artist Terry Honstead.

Time and Date: Opening reception June 10 from 3-6 p.m. Show continues June 12-14 from 12 noon – closing.
Location: The Fireside Restaurant is located 1 mi. west of Bagley on Highway 2.


Art in the Park in Bagley, MN Seeks Artists to Exhibit their Work

Deadline for application to exhibit at Bagley Art in the Park is June 12, 2012.  Participation is open to all artists who exhibit work of original concept, designs, and execution.  The exhibitor fee is $30.00 per booth space.  Fee will be returned by mail if artist is not selected to exhibit.

Region 2 Arts Council Seeking Board Applicants in 3 Counties

Region 2 Arts Council is currently seeking Board members from Clearwater, Hubbard and Mahnomen Counties to fill a two-year term vacancy beginning July 1, 2012. Applications are due by May 1st, 2012.

Those who feel that the visual, performing and literary arts are an important contribution to the quality of life in Minnesota are encouraged to consider serving on the board of Region 2 Arts Council. The board is responsible for planning, setting policy and reviewing and awarding grants. It meets seven times per year in Bemidji on the third Monday of the month. Members are reimbursed for travel.

Region 2 Arts Council is one of eleven arts councils in the state of Minnesota and awards over $230,000 annually for art activities in the five counties of Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Lake of the Woods and Mahnomen. The council operates with funds from the Minnesota State Legislature, the Arts and Cultural Heritage Legacy Funds and the McKnight Foundation.

Region 2 Arts Council Awards Individual Artist Grants

Region 2 Arts Council (R2AC) recently awarded $8,635 through the Individual Artist Grant Program to individual artists in Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard,  and Lake of the Woods Counties.

The purpose of this grant is to stimulate new artistic endeavors in the region by providing project assistance to regional artists who are seriously committed to their work and to the advancement of their artistic careers. The Individual Artist Grant Program is supported by a grant from the McKnight Foundation.

Calvin Rice of Bemidji was awarded $900 to purchase a photo-quality data projector to adequately display his art photographs during teaching and slide exhibitions.

Judith Kay Larson of Baudette was awarded $1,000 to purchase supplies and learn how to fire silver metal clay and torch fuse argentum wire for jewelry making.

Wendell Affield of Shevlin was awarded $1,000 to promote and market his memoir Muddy Jungle Rivers.

Jeff Burger of Bemidji was awarded $1,000 to fund a mentorship with pottery artist Linda Christianson to help him in the firing of a new wood-fired soda kiln at his studio.

Kathy Towley of Bemidji was awarded $1,000 to purchase a larger capacity wood lathe to allow her to explore and expand her creative process through woodturning.

Erin Lynn Marsh of Bemidji was awarded $600 to mentor with established poet Sharon Chmielarz to work on her poetry with the goal of producing a manuscript that can be sent in to a book contest and also to publishers.

Julia E. Lamon of Bemidji was awarded $1,000 to travel to Italy and participate in Opera Siena, where she will learn Italian, receive vocal coaching and perform in operas.

Wendi Storbeck of Baudette was awarded $748 to learn Renaissance Italian Masters portrait painting in oils from Frank Covino.

Erik Evensen of Bemidji was awarded $724 to upgrade his equipment in order to produce, in collaboration with composer Andrew Boysen, Jr., a commissioned project by a body of schools and universities.

Joe Rossi of Blackduck was awarded $653 to purchase a digital camera to use to photographically document one year in the life of a bog.

Our ten-member Board is comprised of two representatives from each of the five counties that we serve.  R2AC is currently seeking four board members from Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard and Mahnomen counties to fill a two-year term vacancy beginning July 1, 2012.
