Region 2 Schools, Community Ed programs, and Non-Profits of Any Kind!

R2AC’s Arts Project Grant Deadline is Tuesday, March 12.

If your organization could use up to $1,500 for an arts project or event that will happen within the next year, then please consider an Arts Project Grant to cover or help defray the cost of the program or event.

There is a 20% cash match required for this grant. Download an application from our website, or stop by our office at 426 Bemidji Avenue for a paper copy.

The grant format is manageable, and there’s still time!  All applications must be postmarked or in our office by 5 p.m. tomorrow, March 12, 2013. R2AC office staff will review all grants that are submitted by the deadline date before we send them to the review panel.  You can breathe easy once you get those grants in the mail or in our hands by 5 p.m. tomorrow.

It’s Oliver! This Weekend at the Historic Chief Theater

If you haven’t seen it yet, be sure to include Oliver! in your plans for this weekend!

  • Friday & Saturday, Nov. 16&17 at 7:30 p.m.
  • Sunday Matinee, Nov. 18 at 2 p.m.

Under the direction of Mary Knox Johnson, with vocal director Karen Bradley and accompanist Wayne Hoff,  Bemidji Community Theater collaborates with the Paul Bunyan Playhouse to present this timeless classic at The Historic Chief Theater in downtown Bemidji. 

Tickets: Iverson Corner Drug, Ken K. Thompson Jewelry at the Mall, or at the box office one hour before the show.  $12/ adults and $6 /17 and under.  Bring a non-perishable food item to the theater for a $1 refund on the ticket price.

This activity is funded, in part, by an appropriation from the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the State’s general fund.

$7,868 Recently Awarded in R2AC Arts Project Grants

Region 2 Arts Council (R2AC) recently awarded $7,868 through the Arts Project Grant Program, designed for organizations and schools to create or produce an arts project or event. The grant recipients included:

Mask & Rose Women’s Theater Collective, Bemidji, received $1,500 to produce “the Oxcars” an evening of celebration and awards for Region 2 theater groups.

Bemidji Community Theater, Bemidji, was awarded $960 to implement a youth internship program in the area of technical theater, including scene design, painting and construction.

Peacemaker Resources, Bemidji, received $1,440 to work with middle school students from Schoolcraft Learning Community to create original youth radio programming centered on the themes of exploring our world and making a better place to be named “Peacemaker Radio.”

Akeley Chamber of Commerce, Akeley, was awarded $1,500 to facilitate a workshop with Mary Therese Peterson in which Akeley youth will create banners to be hung on light poles on Highway 34 and Highway 64.

Headwaters School of Music & the Arts, Bemidji received $1,500 to provide a paid accompanist for First City Singers rehearsals and community performances.

Schoolcraft Learning Community, Bemidji, was awarded $968 to present their winter and spring concerts at the Bemidji High School Performing Arts Center at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 6, 2012 and Thursday May 16. 2013, showcasing the choirs, orchestras, and the French program.

This Weekend in the Arts!

Here are several of the R2AC grant-supported arts events happening in Region 2 this weekend:

Nov. 9-11:  The Foreigner (Baudette)
Pequana Playhouse proudly presents The Foreigner. Dinner Theater Nov. 9 &  10 (dining at 6:00 p.m.,  play at 7:00).  Sunday Matinee Nov. 11 (dining 1:00 p.m., play at 2:00 p.m.).  $7/person. $12 includes dinner. Advance tickets:  Howard’s Oil and The Smiling Moon in Baudette.  “Show only” tickets also available at the door.

Nov. 11  Bemidji Symphony Orchestra: Music and War
Under the direction of Dr. Beverly Everett, BSO presents the second concert of the series “Tunes & Topics” on Veteran’s Day, Sunday, November 11, 2012 at 3:00 pm at the Bemidji High School Auditorium. Doors open for seating at 2:30 pm. Special guest artist Wesley Baldwin, cellist, will be featured on Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E minor, Op. 85. (For more concert detail, go to the BSO website. A post-concert conversation will follow.
All veterans of the United States Armed Forces are invited to attend the concert free of charge. Complementary tickets can be picked up at the Beltrami County Veterans’ Service Office at 616 America Ave. NW, Suite 140, or at the door.

All seats are general admission. Nov. 11:   The Hunts (Bemidji)
Champion fiddling is mixed with a blend of world-ranked step dancing, and beautiful vocal harmonies with this talented family of 9.  Performance at the Bemidji High School Auditorium at 7:30 p.m.  Tickets available at HSMA 519 MN Ave., Overbeeks Electronics, Kelsey’s Jewelry.  Adults: $17 in advance/$20 at the door. Students: $5. Sponsored by Paul Bunyan Communications and made possible by the voters of Minnesota through grants from the Region 2 Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

Fellowship and Arts Project Grant Deadlines: TOMORROW!

Region 2 Arts Council staff is REALLY looking forward to seeing those grant applications come rolling in today and tomorrow!

Remember,  the postmark deadline for the R2AC/McKnight Career Development Fellowship and the Arts Project Grant is TOMORROW, September 12, at 5:00 p.m. So drop off your applications at our office in the Old Carnegie Library Building at 426 Bemidji Avenue N in Bemidji or drop them off at the post office and ensure they are postmarked by Sept. 12.

R2AC/McKnight Career Development Fellowship
Deadline: September 12, 2012
Open to established artists in all disciplines who show a commitment to their career. This 18-month fellowship provides the opportunity for career development experiences that will add depth and advancement to any artistic career. Two $6,000 fellowships will be awarded per year.

Arts Project Grant
Deadline: September 12, 2012
Open to any non-profit organization, school (including community education offices), and units of government.  These grants offer funding for a variety of art projects including costs related to performances or exhibitions, engagement of guest artists, and artists-in-residence. Organizations can apply for grants up to $1,500.

Projects funded through R2AC should have primary impact on, and accessibility to, residents of Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Lake of the Woods, and Mahnomen Counties. Grant application packets are available for download or at the Region 2 Arts Council office in Bemidji.

Anishinaabe Arts Initiative Grant
Deadline: October 3, 2012

Open to individual Native American artists in all arts disciplines. This grant offers funding for costs associated with the exhibition, performance, or production of a creative work; purchase of materials or equipment necessary for a creative work; educational opportunities; mentorships; and proposals for career-enhancing projects or opportunities. Open to Native American artists residing in Becker, Beltrami, Cass, Clearwater, Hubbard, Itasca, Lake of the Woods, Mahnomen, and Roseau Counties. Artists can apply for grants up to $1,000.

Individual Artist Grant
Deadline: October 4, 2012

Open to artists in all art disciplines. This grant offers funding for costs associated with the exhibition, performance, or production of a creative work; purchase of materials or equipment necessary for a creative work; educational opportunities; mentorships; and proposals for career-enhancing projects or opportunities. Open to artists residing in Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Lake of the Woods, and Mahnomen Counties. Artists can apply for grants up to $1,000.

R2AC Grant Writing Workshop in Mahnomen this Thursday

On July 26, 2012 at the Red Apple Cafe in Mahnomen, Minnesota, Region 2 Arts Council staff will be presenting FREE grant writing workshops for those interested in applying for Region 2 Arts Council grants.

5:00-6:30 p.m.:  Grants for organizations, schools, and units of government: Arts and Cultural Heritage grant (deadline Aug 16) and Arts Project Grant (deadline Sept 12).

6:30-7:30 p.m.:  Grants for individuals: Arts and Cultural Heritage Grants (deadline Aug 16), R2AC/McKnight Career Development Fellowships (deadline Sept 12), Individual Artist Grants (deadline Oct 4), and Anishinaabe Arts Initiative Grants (deadline Oct 3).

With a new round of grant deadlines approaching, Region 2 Arts Council (R2AC) will offer free grant writing workshops for organizations, schools, and units of government and individuals within the five counties of Region 2.

Workshops for organizations will cover  Arts and Cultural Heritage Grants (Aug 16 deadline) and Arts Project Grants (Sept 12 deadline). Special attention will be given to Outcome-Based Evaluations for Arts and Cultural Heritage grants.

Workshops for individual artists will cover Arts and Cultural Heritage Grants (Aug 16 deadline), R2AC/McKnight Career Development Fellowships (Sept 12 deadline), Individual Artist Grants (Oct 4 deadline), and Anishinaabe Arts Initiative Grants (Oct 3 deadline).

Puccini’s Madama Butterfly June 28th and 30th in Bemidji

Loon Opera Company presents Puccini’s tragic love story Madama Butterfly onstage at Bemidji High School Auditorium on June 28 & 30 at 7:30 PM.

This is a fully staged production complete with a cast of singers from across the nation and full orchestra comprised of members from the Bemidji, St. Cloud and Grand Forks Symphonies. Performed in Italian with English supertitles projected above the stage.
