$12,000 in funds available for R2AC/McKnight Career Development Fellowship – Two Fellowships awarded every year

Individual Artists of at least 21 years of age with a minimum 5-year history of sustained accomplishment in their chosen artistic field, residing for at least one year prior to deadline in one of the following Minnesota counties: Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Lake of the Woods, or Mahnomen, may apply for this 18-month fellowship funded by the McKnight foundation. The goal of the R2AC/McKnight Career Development Fellowship Program is to provide substantial support to the region’s most talented artists to further their artistic works through study, introspection or innovation and to facilitate depth and advancement in their artistic careers. Deadline: September 11, 2014.

New R2AC Submission Policy: All materials submitted 2 weeks prior to the deadline will be carefully reviewed for omissions and detailed feedback will be provided to the applicant.  Materials submitted after two weeks prior to the deadline will be reviewed by R2AC staff as time allows.  All grants submitted by the deadline date will be sent “as submitted” to the board for review.

These grants offer funding for costs associated with the exhibition, performance, or production of a creative work; purchase of materials or equipment necessary for a creative work; educational opportunities; mentorships; and proposals for career-enhancing projects or opportunities.This grant is designed for artists at various career stages and emerging artists are encouraged to apply. Artists can apply for grants up to $1,000.

Big check pictures are in! Plans are in place!  If you haven’t heard, back in October 2013, sculpture artist Kathy Gustafson and director/performing artist Cate Belleveau received McKnight funded Region 2 Arts Council Career Development Fellowships.

Cate Belleveau, of Puposky, a local writer, actor, director, teacher and founder of the Mask and Rose Women’s Theater Collective, was awarded $6,000 to attend the Network of Ensemble Theater’s National Summit and Dell’Arte International’s Summer Workshops. Her focus will be on physical theater, theater in a rural setting, and storytelling by using stories drawn from and shared by the community. She will create a local ensemble theater group to utilize these new skills and ideas that will perform at Belle Thalia Creative Arts Space.

Kathy Gustafson, of Bemidji, a local painter, sculptor, artist career counselor for Springboard for the Arts and member of Studio Ten, was awarded $6,000 to incorporate metals such as stainless steel, copper, bronze, brass and aluminum into her sculptures. Her plan includes working with other local sculptors to learn hot metal/forging techniques and methods of applying patinas and finishes. Her Fellowship will result in a new body of work intended for public display.

Belleveau and Gustafson were selected from a very competitive, extraordinarily worthy pool of Region 2 artist applicants.  Look ahead to fall 2014 for another chance to apply!
