FY 2010 presented R2AC’s first opportunity to award funding resulting from Legacy grants.
Legacy grants have become available as a result of Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008.
R2AC has developed a number of new Legacy Grants: Arts and Cultural Heritage Grants, Community Arts Support Grants, Artist Mentor Grants, and Arts Legacy Grants.
Arts and Cultural Heritage Grants
Artists and organizations benefiting from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Grants are as follows.
Rose Heim: $3,000 to complete a photo exhibit that is a “portrait”of Kelliher, Waskish and the surrounding area.
Bemidji State University Music Department: $4,089 to commission and premier a multi-harpsichord concerto by MN composer Asako Hirabayashi written for and performed by La Musique Nomade.
Headwaters School of Music & Arts: $4,088 to purchase four potter wheels to facilitate pottery workshops for adults and children.
Headwaters School of Music & Arts: $4,820 to host a water-color workshop with internationally known artist, Paul Jackson.
Kelliher School: $1,938 to take the Holocaust Literature and English 11 Holocaust Literature and Literature 11 Classes at Kelliher School classes to the “The Diary of Anne Frank” at the Park Square Theatre in St. Paul, MN.
Kristin Majkrzak: $1,990 to attend an international fiber arts conference to learn new tapestry weaving skills. She will provide classes in the art form to northern Minnesotans in late 2010.
Marion Reil and Grace Garland: $3,000 to host 10 watercolor workshops at assisted living facilities in Clearwater and Beltrami counties.
Boys & Girls Club of Bemidji Area Teen members: $6,000 for visual and theater arts programming. Teens will create six painted and batiked screens and six dyed screens for the teen center stage and participate in 12 weeks of theater arts classes.
Bemidji Community Theater: $4,200 for a collaborative production with the Paul Bunyan Playhouse of Disney’s musical, Aladdin, Jr.
Clearbrook-Gonvick High School: $4,120 for students to visit museums and theaters in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area.
Northern Exposure to Lifelong Learning, Bagley: $4,500 to sponsor a one-day festival of ethnic music.
Headwaters Center for Lifelong Learning, Park Rapids: $4,945 to offer a series of sessions about cultural and folk art traditions and ethnic heritage, culminating with a multi-ethnic festival.
The Depot Preservation Alliance, Baudette: $2,000 to bring in art and design consultants to guide the development of the exhibit celebrating the cultural heritage of the Baudette area.
Lake of the Woods School : $4,545 to hire mosaic artist, Marsha Wolff, for a two week Artist in Residence program to teach students how to design and make mosaic art.
Lake of the Woods School: $2,000 to take the class of 2010 to see “Footloose” at the Chanhassen Dinner Theater as a supplement to their usual Senior Class Trip.
The Center of Human Environment, Mahnomen: $6,000 to provide opportunities for artistic expression that will enrich residents’ lives at this group home.
Headwaters School for Music and the Arts was awarded $6000 to be used to assist with costs for “A Weekend with Billy Collins.” Collins is the former Poet Laureate of the United States. He will be in Bemidji the weekend of September 25 giving workshops and readings.
Natalia Himirska was awarded $2,778 to assist in the production of “Flora and Fauna,” a watercolor, oil and encaustic painting exhibition with a strong educational component highlighting the interaction of these three different media in imaginative and realistic compositions. Raised and trained in Eastern Europe, but now a United States citizen, the artist will bring a cross-cultural awareness to her work, many of which will be based on landscapes around Region 2.
Jacque Tinsley was awarded $2,832 to be used to present quality ethnic and cultural music, featuring the Native American Flute and the Celtic Folk Harp to senior living centers and public schools in Clearbrook and Mahnomen, Minnesota.
Jon Romer was awarded $2,355 to be used to present quality ethnic and cultural music, featuring the Native American Flute and the Celtic Folk Harp to senior living centers and public schools in Bagley and Baudette, Minnesota.
Headwaters School for Music and the Arts was awarded $3,155 to defray the costs of presenting the 2nd annual Lakes Area Drumset Camp which is open to all levels of percussionists and will be held at the Headwaters School for Music and the Arts this August.
Park Rapids Lakes Area Arts Council was awarded $3,770 to assist in costs of producing and presenting the “Youth Music & Arts Showcase,” a three-day event in downtown Park Rapids that showcases the talents of area youth at a concert venue.
Kathy Jo McKeown will use her award of $783 towards creating a slideshow of images that will be accompanied by original music and played at the Bemidji State Park visitor center.
Mask and Rose Theater was awarded $4,870 that will assist in producing a theater project in which local female students ranging in age from 11 to 18 will write plays based on essays from Eve Ensler’s “I Am an Emotional Being.” The theater production will be performed on an outdoor stage and later tour local schools and area Boys and Girls Clubs.
Lynn Studanski will use her award of $2,754 towards acquiring equipment to complete her glass bead-making studio where the artist will provide instruction in the art of making lampwork beads.
Bemidji Symphony Orchestra will use an award of $6,000 to present a master class for regional choral high school students, taught by Dr. Jennifer Swanson.
Park Rapids Lakes Area Arts Council was awarded $3,950 to present “Art Leap 2010” a two-day event featuring an afternoon of live performances and a driving tour to local artists’ studios and workshops, as well as other cultural destinations.
Park Rapids Lakes Area Arts Council will use a $3,000 award to bring area artists, artisans, musicians, writers, and dancers into the business community of downtown Park Rapids on the Third Thursday of each month.
Jennifer Geraedts will use her $735 grant award to cover the costs of studying the art of bookbinding with bookbinder David Farkell. She will pass her knowledge on to others in her area via workshops.
Clear Waters Life Center will use $3,018 of funding to assist in hiring two artists to work with the community through a series of workshops for the purpose of designing and fabricating an outdoor sculpture for the Center.
Peacemakers Resources received $6,000 to assist in the coordination and implementation of the performance and education components of Bemidji’s Cultural Connections Day.
