Region 2 Arts Council Awards Community Arts Support Grants

The Region 2 Arts Council recently granted $50,000 in Community Arts Support grants that are available as a result of funding through the Minnesota State Legislature and the Minnesota Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment passed by voters of Minnesota in November of 2008.

Community Arts Support Grants provide some measure of funding stability for non-profit arts organizations so that their energy can be better focused on increasing the quality and availability of the arts to their communities.

Non-profit arts organizations that benefited from the Community Arts Support Grants are as follows:

Heartland Concert Association, Park Rapids, was awarded $4,000 to provide quality musical, educational and cultural entertainment genres to the surrounding area.

Bemidji Symphony Orchestra, Bemidji, was awarded $6,000 to support and promote the orchestra by developing the administrative side of the organization through a part time executive director.

Northern Light Opera Company, Park Rapids was awarded $6,000 to hire professional stage and technical directors for their annual summer productions.

Bemidji Community Theater, Bemidji, was awarded $3,000 to enhance their web site, increase publicity, purchase tools for building sets, and to rent costume storage.

Pequana Playhouse, Baudette was awarded $3,000 to be more available to the public by providing a location for public access.

Northern Artist Association, Bemidji, was awarded $4,000 to assist with marketing and overhead expenses to enhance artistic offerings at Gallery North.

Blank Canvas Gallery and Education Center, Park Rapids was awarded $1,500 to create and implement a marketing and communications plan.

Bemidji Community Art Center, Bemidji was awarded $6,000 to continue to employ our part-time Executive Assistant and to hire a part-time Program Coordinator to implement arts education programming

Lake of the Woods Art Guild, Baudette was awarded $2,000 to assist in applying for 501(C)3 nonprofit status and for rent of studio space and art gallery.

Mask & Rose Women’s Theater Collective, Bemidji was awarded $3,000 to purchase a light board and lights, and for rental of the theater space.

Park Rapids Area Community Band, Park Rapids was awarded $2,500 to purchase an English Horn, support solo performing artists and purchase music.

Bemidji Area Community Band, Bemidji was awarded $2,000 to purchase shirts and music holders for use in their concerts.

Nemeth Art Center, Park Rapids was awarded $4,000 to employ a part-time executive director to administer the art activities of the Nemeth Art Center.

Bemidji Chorale, Bemidji was awarded $3,000 to continue its mission to provide the community with high quality choral music by providing adequate compensation for the conductor and accompanist.

The arts are a vital part of life in northern Minnesota. The Region 2 Arts Council is dedicated to supporting opportunities for arts creation, promotion, education and funding for the people of Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Lake of the Woods, and Mahnomen counties in north central Minnesota.

Anishinaabe Arts Initiative Grant Recipients Announced

The Region 2 Arts Council (R2AC) awarded $3,900 through the Anishinaabe Arts Initiative (AAI) Program. Monies awarded are for arts activities related to its mission of supporting, maintaining, and promoting traditional and contemporary Native American arts in North Central Minnesota.

The Anishinaabe Arts Initiative grants program is supported by a grant from the McKnight Foundation.  The grant recipients and information about their projects are listed below.

Dana Goodwin, of Mahnomen, received $1,000 to create, in collaboration with Dennis Williams, a beaded, quilted, and brain-tanned buckskin skirt to accompany a fully beaded northern traditional top.

David Clark, of Bemidji, received $1,000 to purchase Protools software and Grace Design M101 microphone pre-amp to help in recording his next album with his band N8ive Bro.

Mika Marqui Pacheco-Northbird, of Cass Lake, was awarded $911 to create fully beaded dance regalia to be used as first prize in a local Iron Man Contest.

Current AAI Council members are Tom Buckanaga, Mary Guardipee, Douglas Lee, Genny Lowry, Bernice Mitchell, Delana Smith, Debra Warren, Delina White, and Harold “Dunesy” White, Jr.

Region 2 Arts Council Awards Individual Artist Grants

Region 2 Arts Council (R2AC) recently awarded $8,635 through the Individual Artist Grant Program to individual artists in Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard,  and Lake of the Woods Counties.

The purpose of this grant is to stimulate new artistic endeavors in the region by providing project assistance to regional artists who are seriously committed to their work and to the advancement of their artistic careers. The Individual Artist Grant Program is supported by a grant from the McKnight Foundation.

Calvin Rice of Bemidji was awarded $900 to purchase a photo-quality data projector to adequately display his art photographs during teaching and slide exhibitions.

Judith Kay Larson of Baudette was awarded $1,000 to purchase supplies and learn how to fire silver metal clay and torch fuse argentum wire for jewelry making.

Wendell Affield of Shevlin was awarded $1,000 to promote and market his memoir Muddy Jungle Rivers.

Jeff Burger of Bemidji was awarded $1,000 to fund a mentorship with pottery artist Linda Christianson to help him in the firing of a new wood-fired soda kiln at his studio.

Kathy Towley of Bemidji was awarded $1,000 to purchase a larger capacity wood lathe to allow her to explore and expand her creative process through woodturning.

Erin Lynn Marsh of Bemidji was awarded $600 to mentor with established poet Sharon Chmielarz to work on her poetry with the goal of producing a manuscript that can be sent in to a book contest and also to publishers.

Julia E. Lamon of Bemidji was awarded $1,000 to travel to Italy and participate in Opera Siena, where she will learn Italian, receive vocal coaching and perform in operas.

Wendi Storbeck of Baudette was awarded $748 to learn Renaissance Italian Masters portrait painting in oils from Frank Covino.

Erik Evensen of Bemidji was awarded $724 to upgrade his equipment in order to produce, in collaboration with composer Andrew Boysen, Jr., a commissioned project by a body of schools and universities.

Joe Rossi of Blackduck was awarded $653 to purchase a digital camera to use to photographically document one year in the life of a bog.

Community Arts Support Grant Deadline: February 15, 2012

Did you know that Community Arts Support Grants are open to any arts organization in Region 2?  Read on!

These grants are two-year awards that help provide some measure of funding stability for arts organizations so that their energy can be better focused on increasing the quality and availability of the arts to their communities. Organizations can qualify to apply for up to $6,000 in funds based on their annual expenses.

If your arts organization misses this application deadline, you will need to wait two years before you have the opportunity to apply again. Applications are available at the Region 2 Arts Council Office, 426 Bemidji Avenue, Bemidji, MN  56601 and are also available for download here.

Projects funded through R2AC’s grants programs should have primary impact on and accessibility to residents of Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Lake of the Woods, and Mahnomen Counties.

Individual Artist Grant Deadline February 7th! Are You Ready?

All submissions for Region 2 Arts Council Individual Artist Grants are due in the Region 2 Arts Council office by 5 p.m. on February 7, 2012 or postmarked and in the mail by that same date. 

Individual Artists Grants support individual artists who reside in Hubbard, Beltrami, Lake of the Woods, Clearwater, and Mahnomen counties in the creation and promotion of their art.  Applicants may apply for funds up to $1000.

Download a copy of the Individual Artist Grant here, or stop by the Region 2 Arts Council office at 426 Bemidji Avenue in Bemidji to pick up a paper copy of the grant.  Our office is open 9-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

R2AC Awards Individual Artist Grants

Region 2 Arts Council (R2AC) recently awarded $8,534 through the Individual Artist Grant Program to individual artists in Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Mahnomen, and Lake of the Woods Counties.  The purpose of this grant is to stimulate new artistic endeavors in the region by providing project assistance to regional artists who are seriously committed to their work and to the advancement of their artistic careers. The Individual Artist Grant Program is supported by a grant from the McKnight Foundation.

Tandy Bowman of Bemidji was awarded $944 to attend the HealthRhythms Adolescent Protocol Training in Valencia California to expand her knowledge as a trained group drumming facilitator.

Jonathan Billing of Bemidji was awarded $1,000 to purchase tools and equipment for creation of art for a solo show at the MacRostie Art Center in April 2012.

Gayle Highberg of Bagley was awarded $1,000 to complete 12-weeks of instruction in acrylics and mixed media with local painter Terry Honstead.

Marion Caroline Reil of Bemidji was awarded $590 to purchase a mat cutter and display system for 2012 classes and art shows.

Susan Carol Hauser of Puposky was awarded $1,000 to travel to Chicago to attend the Associated Writing Programs Annual Conference and to meet with publishers.

Jacque Tinsley of Bemidji was awarded $1,000 to purchase a new harp that is lighter to transport for upcoming gigs with her ensemble “Timeless Traditions.”

Joseph Stephen Holt and Roy L. Hershberger of Bemidji were each awarded $1,000 to record and produce a 12 song CD of their band “Acoustic Smoke.”

Margaret Burger of Bemidji was awarded $1000 to mentor in puppetry with Sandra Spieler, artistic director of In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theater, culminating in a community performance.
