Arts Projects Grants Awards

Bemidji Sculpture Walk

The Region 2 Arts Council (R2AC) recently awarded $14,000 through the Arts Project Grants Program, designed for organizations and schools to create or produce an arts project or event such as an arts workshop, a play, an exhibit, a performance, a collaborative work, etc.  Grants of up to $1,500 are awarded for expenses associated with projects or opportunities that contribute significantly to the community.  The recipients are listed below with information about their projects.

 

 

The Bemidji Sculpture Walk in Bemidji will use a grant of $925 to assist them in the production of a 2009 brochure for the sculpture walk.

 

The City of Mahnomen in Mahnomen was awarded $1,500 to assist them in funding up to 20 local artists to paint fire hydrants throughout their city.

 

 

The Headwaters School of Music in Bemidji will use awarded funds of $1,500 to provide music and arts performances at Lake Bemidji State Park this summer.

 

The Community Education Department of Park Rapids School District 309 in Park Rapids received $1,500 to present a Summer Arts Safari that will include children ages seven and older as cast members in the performance of a play.

 

The Bemidji Community Art Center in Bemidji received $1,495 for their use in hosting the It’s Only Clay National Juried Ceramics Competition and Exhibition.

 

The Park Rapids Lakes Area Arts Council in Park Rapids received a grant of $1,080 to assist them in funding Art Leap 2009, a driving tour of artists’ studios and workshops in the Park Rapids area.

 

The Department of Visual Arts at Bemidji State University in Bemidji was awarded $1,500 to present an exhibition and lecture by Bulgarian artist, Angel Mihaylov.

 

The Northern Light Opera Company in Park Rapids received $1,500 to assist them in funding the 2009 performance of Fiddler on the Roof.

 

The Headwaters School of Music in Bemidji was awarded $1,500 for Bluegrass Workshops and Concerts in Clearbrook.

 

The Community Education Department of Bagley Independent School District #162 in Bagley was awarded $1,500 to present multi-instrumentalist, Todd Green’s public performance of original music inspired by many different cultures.  Green will also conduct two educational lyceums at Bagley Elementary, Junior and High Schools for students and the general public.

Anishinaabe Arts Initiative Awards

The Region 2 Arts Council (R2AC) recently awarded $5,065 through the Anishinabe Arts Initiative (AAI) Program.  Monies awarded are for arts activities related to its mission of supporting, maintaining, and promoting traditional and contemporary Native American arts in North Central Minnesota.  The Anishinabe Arts Initiative grants program is supported by a grant from the McKnight Foundation.  Current AAI Council members are Tom Buckanaga, Dawn Goodwin, Douglas Lee, Genny Lowry, Bernice Mitchell, Audrey Thayer, Debra Warren, and Delina White.

The Indian Studies Program at Bemidji State University in Bemidji was awarded $1,938 to assist them in co-sponsoring their annual Spring Art Show with the Leech Lake Tribal College in Cass Lake.

Duane Goodwin, a visual artist from Bemidji was granted $800 to assist him in the purchase of digital photography equipment that will enable him to document various stages of his individual sculptures.

Dave Van Wert, a visual artist from Bemidji received a $727 award to purchase tools that will aid him in his stone sculptures.

Wesley May, a visual artist from Bemidji, was awarded $800 to assist him in creating a cohesive body of work to exhibit at national art shows and may help him to strengthen his marketing opportunities.

Margaret LaRoque, a visual artist from Cass Lake received $800 to purchase a computer and printer to assist her in creating and selling her jewelry.

The next deadline for R2AC Anishinabe Arts Initiative Grants is October 1, 2009.

Other available grants include:  Arts Project Grants, deadline September 15, 2009, Individual Artist Grants, deadline October 7, 2009; and the McKnight Grants (open only to 501(c)3 arts organizations), deadline January 13, 2010.

Kovala will challenge artists to improve their confidence and skill in watercolor
painting. She will stimulate creativity and enthusiasm for producing more and
better paintings.
